Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine
This carbine was manufactured in 1869 and was later converted to centerfire. The "Yellowboy" Model 1866 was the first Winchester, and the '66 carbines were particularly sought-after for use in the Old West and continued to see widespread use alongside the earlier Henry rifles and the later Model 1873s. The Model 1866 was particularly popular with various Native American groups and is known to have been used in multiple historically significant battles, including the Battle of Little Bighorn.

Lot 2
J.P. Lower Marked Sharps Model 1878 Borchardt Hunter's Rifle
This is one of an estimated 62 Model 1878 Borchardt Hunter's Rifles manufactured in 1878-1881 and has the top of the receiver marked "J.P. LOWER/DENVER COL." for the famed western dealer John Pray Lower (1833-1917) whose "Sportsmen's Depot" in Denver was one of the most popular western gun shops. He found the Model 1878 less desired by his western customers, writing to Sharps asking them to "send no more of the hammerless guns. Only the old models will sell." Thus, Lower marked Model 1878s are very scarce! The barrel has the caliber designation 40 1 7/8 for .40-70.

Lot 10
New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle with Bayonet Lug
This rifle was manufactured c. January 1865 towards the end of the Civil War and is one of a very small number of Henry rifles fitted with a lug on the right side of the barrel shroud for mounting a bayonet. The Henry rifle was one of the most advanced firearms of the war and saw significant use during the latter years of the conflict, but the inability to mount a bayonet was one of the key factors preventing the Henry rifle from being adopted more widely for military service. This rifle has a shorter lug, and the barrel has a longer exposed round section for fitting a mounting ring. Some examples are known with a longer bayonet lug for use with the "Bahn Frei" bayonets. For an example, see pages 184-186 of "The Story of Benjamin Tyler Henry and His Famed Repeating Rifle" by Les Quick. The Henry was never made in quantity with adaptations for bayonets, but the Model 1866 that followed was available as a "musket" that could take a bayonet which allowed lever actions to enter more widespread military service.

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle
This rifle was manufactured in 1869 and has the desirable two-line Henry's patent and King's improvement patent marking on the barrel ahead of the notch and folding ladder rear sight that points to the Winchester Model 1866 as the descendant of the famous Henry lever action rifle of the Civil War. The two models were widely used in the American West following the Civil War and were relied upon for both putting meat on the table and combat, including in battles between Native Americans and the U.S. Army as well as by frontiersmen staking out new lives for their families in the West.
