Description:

This is an example of a Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver that was manufactured during the Civil War in 1862. The revolver has a blued barrel and cylinder, casehardened frame, loading lever and hammer, and brass silver-plated trigger guard and back strap. The one-piece walnut grip has a high-polish piano finish. The revolver has a six-shot cylinder and round trigger guard. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in one line. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". The left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines. The full serial number, "214530" is located on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number, "14530" is stamped on the wedge and cylinder. The loading lever and cylinder arbor pin are numbered "4530". All of the serial numbers match. The revolver is complete with a Colt mahogany American style case lined with dark brown velvet. The case has five compartments and contains assorted lead round balls and conical bullets, key, a .31 caliber brass double cavity bullet mold marked "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines across the top of the block, early Japanned Ely cap tin and an Eagle and Shield powder flask with design on both sides of the body, dark brown lacquer finish, brass charger and top, and fire-blue spring.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver frame retains 40% of the original casehardened finish. The barrel has 30% of the original blue finish remaining, mostly in the protected areas. The cylinder has nearly all of the stagecoach holdup scene. The cylinder pins are slightly battered but intact and the percussion nipples and cylinder face show light to moderate flash pitting. Traces of the silver-plated finish are present on protected areas of the trigger guard. The trigger guard and back strap have a mellow, untouched patina. The grip is in excellent condition and retains 95% of the high polish varnish finish. The case exterior is refinished with only scattered and very minor handling marks. The relined case interior is in very good condition, the lining is free from rips and tears and shows only light compression marks and some minor fading. The brass bullet mold is in fair condition and has numerous small dents and scratches. The cap tin has some rust on the lid and is in good condition. The powder flask is in fair condition and retains 70% of the brown lacquer finish, wear is limited to one small dent in the case body. This is a solid example of a Civil War era Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver with case and accessories.
