Unknown Flintlock Pistol 60
According to information provided by the consignor, this arm was the product of Russia's Tula Arsenal. Established by order of Tsar Peter the First in 1712, Tula was Imperial Russia's first state armory, established to take advantage of the pre-existing private gunsmithing industry and readily available raw materials in the city of Tula. In addition to supplying martial arms, Tula was deeply connected to the Russian nobility, and no doubt would have been the prime source of high end custom weaponry, such as this example. Equipped with a blade front sight and notch rear sight, the former an integral part of the 3/4 inch wide gold barrel band, the latter part of the floral scroll engraved tang. The barrel itself shows a strong deep Damascus twist pattern with alternating bands of differing twist density, creating a spiral stripe pattern which emphasizes and draws out the twist designs, as well as a gold touchhole plug. Additional floral scroll engraving is present on the body of the hammer and the rear section of the lock plate, showing an array of flags and drums on the lock ahead of the hammer, finely sculpted and engraved flash pan fence and hinge, and a roller frizzen spring finished in a fiery niter blue. The stock is a finely checkered full length walnut, with raised teardrop flats on each side, scroll borders above and below the checkering, and extensive gold furnishing; the aforementioned barrel band bears a light border engraving on the topside, with a raised scale design leading to floral sections on the underside. The ramrod pipe is scroll engraved, a floral bouquet pattern is present on the trigger guard and finial, with the front section of the guard sculpted into a serpent clutching a feathered fan in its mouth, the reverse plate takes the form of a conjoined pair of bird's heads, and an array of feathers on an oval plate atop the wrist. The buttcap demands special attention, being a two piece assembly with a 3/20 inch ribbed iron panel serving as a base, upon which is mounted a 13/20 inch gold panel, which is decorated around the sides with a dot backed scroll pattern, and the bottom is nearly covered with a raised sculpted flower design.

Superb Exhibition Grade French Hunting Sword with Finely Engrave
Measuring 25 inches in overall length, this sword is equipped with a double edged spear point blade, 18 1/2 inches long, with a pair of deep, thin 7 1/2 inch fullers on each side, and a square ricasso deeply stamped with a floral proof on the reverse. The blade quality is very high, perhaps from a combat weapon of the late 1600s or 1700s. The hilt of the sword is a full three dimensional rendering in cast silver of Hercules preparing to slay the dragon Ladon, with the dragon’s unfurled wings serving as a cross guard and Hercules himself as the grip and pommel. Garbed in the nigh-impenetrable skin of the Nemean Lion, Hercules has pinned the wings of Ladon with his feet and seized the beast’s tail in his left hand, while preparing to strike the fatal blow with the sword in his right. The unsleeping guardian of the Garden of the Hesperides, Ladon was the chief obstacle for the 11th Labor of Hercules, the theft of the Golden Apples, which in Greek myth served as both the Apple of Discord which started the Trojan War and the 3 Apples used in the courting of Atalanta. The level of detail, particularly on Hercules, is very high, as best demonstrated in the face, as he looks down on his soon to be dead quarry. The sheath is also silver, with extensive scroll and floral engraving on the main body, with a pair of suspension rings and attractive raised designs on the throat, mid band and tip. The throat shows cut-through scroll and floral designs and raised columns, with the head of the Nemean Lion on one side and a woman wearing a laurel (possibly representing Athena) on the reverse, the mid band has a grotesque head on each side, topped by a clash of Greek warriors and an ancient sailing ship, and both sides of the tip show an owl, wreathed with laurels.

Wogdon Flintlock Pistol 48 bore
Massive double-barrel flintlock pistol with folding bayonet made by Robert Wogden of London around 1760. The right barrel is inlaid with the inscription: "PRESENTED TO SIR HENRY CLINTON BY GEORGE III". The left side of the barrel is inlaid: "WOGDON & CO. LONDON 1760". George III reigned as King of Great Britain from 1760-1820. He appointed Sir Henry Clinton as Commander in Chief for North America in 1778. Sir Henry Clinton held that post until 1782, shortly after the British defeat at the Battle of Yorktown. He subsequently served as a member of Parliament from 1783-1790 and was appointed Governor of Gibraltar in July of 1794 but died in 1795 before could assume that position. Robert Wogdon (1737-1813) was a London gun maker famous for his high quality pistols. He worked in London from 1774-1802 but was part of the firm of Wogdon & Bannum after 1795. Based upon the inscription, this pistol was probably made shortly after George III assumed the throne in October 1760. The pistol has side-by-side, smoothbore, octagon barrels topped by a spring-fastened, seven-inch, angular bayonet. The pistol has two, flat, flush-fitted lock plates with goose-neck hammers, integral iron, fenced, flash pans, frizzens with delicately curved tops and toes and roller-mounted frizzen springs. The lock plates, hammers and frizzens have engraved, double line borders and are decorated with inlaid scroll work. "WOGDON" is inlaid on the sides of the lock plates ahead of the hammers. Scrollwork flourishes are inlaid on either side of the barrel inscriptions. The top of the barrel is stamped with London proof an view marks, a Broad Arrow and a "Crown/W' inspection mark. The wedge-fastened, dark, English walnut stock has brass furniture. The wedge escutcheons ramrod pipe trigger guard and strapped buttcap are engraved with tight, English, scrollwork. The front of the trigger guard bow is shaped like a serpent grasping the rear of the bow in it's jaws. The top of the grip is inlaid with a silver, heart-shaped, thumb-piece filled with scroll engraving and surmounted by a crown. An iron ramrod pipe is located beneath the barrels and retains a wooden, brass-tipped ramrod. The pistol is complete with a mahogany case with six compartments. The case is not lined. The case contains: (1) cylindrical powder flask with wooden body and brass base, top and fixed charger, (2) screw-driver with wooden handle, (3) iron, single cavity, round ball, bullet mold,(4) ebony cleaning rod with brass tip and ivory handle and (5) two spare flints.

Renette Gastinne G-Rifle Carbine 50
This is an extremely rare example of a unique lever action, single-shot, breech-loading carbine made by famous Paris gun maker Gastinne Renette for Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew Emperor Napoleon III of France circa 1870. The carbine is 37-inches long and has a Damascus finished, round, rifled, barrel with a bayonet lug on the right side. The barrel has a dove-tail mounted pin front sight and folding double leaf rear sight. The carbine has a unique action with a lever that lowers the breech block and external hammer that manually cocks an internal firing pin. The carbine has a highly figured European walnut stock with checkered wrist and iron buttplate. A steel forearm extends about six inches from the receiver. The forearm, receiver, hammer, lever, receiver tang and buttplate tang are engraved with a delicate oak leaf and acorn motif. The engraved portions of the carbine may have originally been gold washed or plated but are now bright. The top of the barrel is lightly engraved "Inv. Gastinne Renette arqr de S.M. Empereur a Paris". "MUSEE DE L'ART'Le" is stamped in small oval cartouches on either side of the stock. The stock cartouche signifies that this carbine was an item belonging to the Musee de L'Artillerie or French Artillery Museum. It is known that articles of wood or metal entering into the Artillery Museum collection were stamped with the "Musee de l'Arte" cartouche until 1905 when the museum became the Musee De l'Armee or French Army Museum. (Note that the famous Army Museum is located in the same building as Napoleon's Tomb in Paris.). This carbine was described in detail in an article published in the September 1989 issue of "GUN REPORT" entitled "Nazi Loot From Napoleon's Tomb". The article described how the carbine had been purchased in San Antonio, Texas, in the 1980s. Subsequent research and correspondence with the French Army Museum in Paris revealed that the Renette carbine was part of the collection of the "Musee de l'Armee" prior to 1905 and was removed from the Army Museum during the Nazi occupation of France in 1940-1944. The cover photo to the issue was this carbine along with a close-up of the museum cartouche. (The article and the correspondence cited in the article are included with this lot.). Then, in 2007, the carbine was seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In the included photocopied Interpol Washington and FBI documents, French authorities requested the seizure and return of this carbine after seeing the carbine for sale on a U.S. online antique gun website. French records indicated that Brigade General Robert Bresse, Director of the Musee De l'Armee carbine officially reported this carbine stolen in 1940. Concluding that the carbine was Property of the French State, an undercover operation initiated by local San Antonio, Texas, FBI agents in conjunction with the FBI's Art Crime Team seized the carbine from a private collector. The FBI considered the recovery operation as "an example of the FBI's commitment to being at the forefront of investigating crimes involving high value, significant, or historic art work." However, the FBI returned the carbine to the private American collector in 2008 after French government failed to "put forth the proper follow-through to help conclude this investigation". The French government failed to send experts to physically examine the carbine to determine if it was stolen. It was the lack of evidence that allowed the firearm to stay in the United States and to be put back on the collector's market. A follow-up article on the Renette carbine was published in the December 2009 issue of "GUN REPORT" and is included in this lot. This is a unique opportunity to own a Renette carbine made for Louis Napoleon, the last monarch of France, and formerly part of the world-famous Musee De l'Armee collection of firearms.

Highly Scarce Flag for the 85th Cohort of Napoleon's French Nati
Established in the early 1790's, the National Guard ended up fighting on both sides of the French Revolution, initially with the Royalists before a shift in membership brought them over to the Revolutionary cause. Though later disarmed by Napoleon, the Guard was maintained as a reserve force, being mobilized in 1809 and 1814. Of the 100 planned Cohorts, only 88 were actually formed, and of that number only 5 known flags survive. A traditional French tricolor, measuring approximately 38 inches square, with gold lettering reading "85.ME COHORTE/DU I.ER BAN/DE LA GARDE/NATIONALE" on the front. Set on black matting in a gold painted frame, with a photocopy of a Certificate of Authenticity from Steven Flood, President of AAG International.

Extraordinary Freccero Facon Gaucho Style Knife with Solid Silve
Originally popularized by the gentlemen of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, and later seen as a trademark of the South American gaucho, the facon knife was a very functional working knife, in addition to being a good weapon for close-in self defense. Finish of these knives could range from plain, utilitarian models for common use up to an example like this, which would be a visible display of wealth and power while still being an agile and dangerous blade. Measuring 11 1/2 inches overall, with a 7 inch blade, featuring a 2 3/4 inch sharp false edge, "MCA M H RDA" on the left side, and the integrally forged contoured ricasso/bolster that is iconic of the facon. The full length tang is set into a silver hilt, which serves as a textured background to a series of solid gold plates, which cover 90% of the surface, with scroll designs, an ornately feathered bird on each side, and a set of four suns on the pommel. The right side of the grip features a pair of ruby gems. The sheath is similar in construction, with the addition of a set of scroll designs in the silver under the belt loop and a pierced-through scroll and leaf pattern on the drag. Another pair of rubies is present on the belt hook and the right side of the drag. With a burgundy leather lined case with white silk lid padding and a French-cut blue velvet interior. The padding is marked "F.J. Freccero/25 MAYO 563/Montevideo". Operating out of Uruguay’s capital city, F.J. Freccero served much the same niche as Tiffany of New York, providing high end jewelry, watches and other accoutrements to an elite clientele, while research shows the "MCA" mark as having been used by Solingen blade makers, suggesting it was produced in Germany and then mated with the jeweler’s hilt and sheath for a client who wished to combine beauty with function. Finest example of this form of knife ever seen by this describer.

Stephen Alexander Henry Pattern Rifle 450
This is an exceptional example of a big bore percussion rifle marked Stephen Alexander and is pictured on page 306 of R.L. Wilson's "Steel Canvas The Art of American Arms". This rifle was also made for Mr. Wilson and was completed in 1988. Wilson calls the rifle "Masterwork by a contemporary maker in tribute to earlier craftsmen." This is a 450 caliber percussion mid-nineteenth century English-style sporting rifle. Some of these rifles are used on African safaris and prove to be deadly accurate. The embellishment was done by Master Engraver Lynton McKenzie. The heavy octagon barrel is equipped with an ivory beaded blade front sight and a fixed iron rear sight with a triangle shaped piece of ivory on the face. The top barrel flat is marked "STEPHEN P ALEXANDER". There is a solid under rib with a walnut ram rod secured by three pipes, with a sling eye mounted on the center pipe. The hammer, lock, bolster and trigger are casehardened, with blue remaining parts. Cased Identified Royal Pair of Finely Engraved Gold Inlaid C.G.
This matched pair of double rifles were reportedly made for the Royal Family of Karl Gustaf by C.G. Koenig, Sachsen, Coburg. Caspar Georg Koenig (1793 - 1857) and his two sons Julius (c. 1822-55) and Gustav (c. 1826 - 60) served Prince Albert's father Ernest I and his son and successor, Prince Albert's brother Ernest II, as court rifle makers. The tradition of gunmaking in Coburg is closely linked to the history of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg. In earlier times this meant the provision of military weapons and the armory of the Veste Coburg remains among the largest in Germany. In the modern period the emphasis was on sporting and presentation weapons. The presentation guns tended not to be used in the field and therefore allowed the maker use the costliest materials and use the most ambitious ornamentation. These rifles fall into the latter category. The Damascus twist barrels gauge at 45 caliber and appear to have chambered a tapered straight neck black powder cartridge. The solid matte features a dovetailed blade front sight and a two leaf, (one fixed, one folding), rear sight. The rib is marked "C. G. KOENIG IN SACHSEN COBURG." and the breech end is marked with a large "1" (B), and "2", (A). There is a sling swivel eye mounted on the underside center rib. There are various proof marks on the flats which are also marked "60" and the rifle is marked "22" on the bottom of the lug, ("B" has no marking in this location). The frame, locks, under lever, hammer and forearm latch assembly are engraved with floral scroll designs. In addition there are relief engraved animal scenes, three bears in a wooded scene on the right side of the frame, two quail in a wooded scene on the left side, a deer in a wooded scene on the left lock and a fox in a wooded scene on the right lock. The top of the frame is marked with the respective "1" and "2" and there is a gold inlaid Royal Cipher on the tang between the hammers. The water table is marked with two crossed crown/scepter proof marks. The walnut splinter forearms are fully checkered, attached to the frame and numbered "1" and "2" respectively on the inside of the hardware. Double triggers, (left adjustable), hammer safeties and mounted with a checkered walnut straight grip stock with a checkered iron buttplate. The pair is complete in a nicely constructed homemade wooden case with green felt lining and 7 compartments.

Scott W C 1862 Rifle 58 percussion
This is an exceptional example of a W.& C. Scott Jacobs percussion rifle which was made as part of a collection of guns specially made for display at the 1862 International Exhibition in London, England. That was the first major venue at which Scott guns were exhibited. This rifle and a double rifle, now in the possession of Holland & Holland, are the only two known survivors of that exhibition, making this rifle extremely rare . The rifle was manufactured in 1862 and is a single barrel example of a Jacobs rifle which was invented by General John Jacob, C.B. The single barrel rifle was developed in the mid-1840s and differed substantially from the military rifles in that it was of a much smaller bore and shorter barrel. Jacob was associated with the East India Co. and tried unsuccessfully to get his double rifle accepted by the Indian Government in 1846. The rifle has a Damascus pattern barrel and solid under rib, with 11 inches of the breech end having a top flat, blade front sight and five separate folding rear sight leafs. The top flat ahead of the rear sight is marked "1862" and behind the sight "W.&C. SCOTT & SON MAKERS 95 BATH ST BIRMINGHAM/EXHIBITED IN THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION LONDON". The hammer, lock, trigger guard and breech plug are very nicely floral scroll engraved. The top flat of the breech plug has a shell design surrounded by floral scroll designs. The lock is marked "W.&C. SCOTT & SON" and in addition to the scroll engraving has a deer lying in a field scene at the front and a buck in a wooded scene at the rear. The lock is equipped with a sliding hammer safety. The trigger guard has a finely checkered grip spur, ebony ram rod with brass end, with a sling eye on the forward pipe and mounted with a one piece walnut straight grip checkered half stock secured by two wedges with engraved escutcheons, teardrop flats and engraved patch box, with a deer in a field scene and floral scroll designs. The buttplate is a shotgun style, finished in bright blue with engraved screw heads. The accompanying W.&C. Scott letter verifies the above information and under estimated production states "Unique, as far as known".
