Description:

This fine original Colt Model 1860 Fluted Army revolver was manufactured in 1861. This revolver is one of the approximately 4000 early production Model 1860 Army revolvers manufactured with fluted cylinders and four-screw frames with stock yoke cuts in the recoil shields. Approximately half of the early production fluted cylinder Model 1860 Army revolvers had 7 1/2 inch barrels. The barrel, cylinder and back strap have small amounts of the high polish commercial blue finish and traces of silver plating are present on the brass trigger guard. The revolver has a one-piece walnut stock with an oil finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" in one line. "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. "PATENTED SEPT.10th 1850" is stamped in one cylinder flute. The full serial number "2795" is located on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and in one cylinder flute. All of the visible serial numbers match. Representing less than 2% of the total Model 1860 Army production of more than 200,000 pistols, fluted cylinder Model 1860 Army revolvers are scarce. Many of these early-production Model 1860 Army revolvers were shipped to the Southern states prior to the outbreak of the Civil War in April 1861 and were used by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 30% of the original blue finish overall. Much of the remaining high polish blue finish is present in the cylinder flutes and in protected areas of the barrel and back strap. Original case colors are lightly visible on the loading lever, frame and hammer. The balance of the barrel, loading lever, frame, cylinder and hammer have a crisp brown-gray patina. Metal surfaces are generally smooth with the exception of some minor flash pitting on the muzzle and the front edges of the hammer. Five of the six cylinder safety pins are intact. The percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder show moderate flash pitting. The markings on the barrel, frame and cylinder are sharp, as are the serial numbers. The original oil finished grip has raised feathered wood grain, several small dings in the edges of the butt and is in very fine overall condition with light handling wear. The action is tight and functions well. This is a an attractive, crisp, original example of both a highly desirable and important Colt Model 1860 Fluted Army revolver.
