Description:

This Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver was manufactured in 1864 and subsequently refurbished in the 20th Century. The revolver has a five inch octagon barrel, six-shot cylinder, silver plated, oval brass trigger guard and select varnished walnut grip. The cylinder is roll-stamped with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". The revolver is factory engraved with the Colt "Late Percussion Vine Style Scroll" used on Colt revolvers between 1861 and 1870. The engraving covers the sides of the barrel lug, loading lever frame and recoil shields, top and sides of the hammer, trigger guard and back strap. The back strap is inscribed "F.H. Holmes" in script letters. The sides of the hammer are engraved with the hound's head motif. The hammer spur has bordered knurling. A small "E" stamped below the serial number on the frame, trigger guard and back strap indicates that components were designated by Colt for engraving or special finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in an engraved panel with flourishes at the muzzle end. "COLT'S/PATENT" is hand-engraved on the left side of the frame. The full serial number, "282686" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame and back strap. The partial serial number "686" is stamped on the loading lever and cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is complete with a Colt mahogany, American style case with red felt lining. The case has five compartments and contains a brass double cavity 1849 Pocket Model bullet mold with "COLT'S PATENT" stamped across the top face of both blocks, brass powder flask with Eagle and Shield motif on the face and fixed charger, blued Model 1849 Pocket Model wrench, tin of Goldmarks percussion caps with green paper label and an assortment of .31 caliber lead balls. The flask does not have any Colt markings.

Rating Definition:

Good as refinished. The metal surfaces are mostly an artificial brown overall. The engraving and markings on the barrel, frame, hammer, trigger guard and back strap show handling wear. The cylinder has had the Stagecoach scene reengraved. The revarnished grip is in very good overall condition with light to moderate handling wear. The case exterior is in very good condition with scattered light handling and storage marks. The interior is in fair condition. The lining is faded and stained and torn in several areas from contact with the revolver hammer and front sight. The bullet mold, flask, tool and cap tin are all in fair condition and show moderate wear. This is a representative example of an inscribed, cased and engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with accessories.
