Description:

This is an excellent original example of a Deluxe Factory Engraved Colt Second Model New Line Revolver that was manufactured in 1877. This revolver has the Second Model features that include a long fluted cylinder with locking notches on the cylinder back, fully knurled cylinder head pin and loading gate in right side of frame. The revolver has a nickel plated finish with blued cylinder pin, niter blue screws and casehardened hammer and trigger. The revolver has factory mother-of-pearl bird's head grips. The revolver is factory engraved with deeply cut Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background and cross-hatched accents on the trigger guard and frame. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co./HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A." in an engraved oval panel on the top of the barrel. The full serial number, "6218" is stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the right side of the frame beneath the grip. The partial serial number "218" is stamped on the rear of the cylinder. "6218" is written in pencil on the inside of the right grip. A large "P" is stamped above the serial number on the right side of the grip.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 98% plus of the original nickel plated finish. Wear is limited to minor flaking on the face of the cylinder and some nearly undetectable dents on the underside of the barrel near the serial number and at the bottom of the bird's head butt. The cylinder pin has most of the original blue finish intact. Nearly all of the fiery niter blue finish is present on the frame and grip screws. The hammer and trigger retain most of the casehardened finish. The flawlessly executed scroll engraving is deep and sharp. The markings and serial numbers are crisp. The pearl bird's head grips are both in very fine condition with several minor "scaling" chips present along the sides and at the edges of the frame. Colt expert R.L. Wilson notes in "THE BOOK OF COLT FIREARMS" that factory engraved Colt new Line revolvers are scarce. This is an excellent example of a factory engraved Colt Second Model New Line revolver.
