Description:

This revolver is one of approximately 300 revolvers that were issued from the Benicia Arsenal to the San Francisco Committee of Safety during the labor riots and civil unrest of 1877-78. The riots and unrest were a result of the great railroad strikes of 1877 that sprung up in many large cities across the United States. Records do exist of these 300 revolvers being issued however, no records exist of them being returned and it is popular belief that once the riots were put down all the revolvers were obtained by the California militia. The top of the back strap features the hand stamped SFPD marking "195". The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, cylinder and frame. The trigger guard and hammer are casehardened and the two-piece walnut grips are oil-finished. The serial number, "7717", is located on the revolver butt and the rear face of the cylinder. The "U.S." property mark is stamped on the bottom of the butt. The left grip has a "DAL" (Lt. David A Lyle) Inspectors cartouche under "1877" and the right grip is stamped with the "CW" (Charles Woodman) Sub-Inspectors initials. Single Sub Inspector letters are stamped on the ejector housing, cylinder, and frame. The lower left side of the barrel lug is roll-stamped with the two line S&W patent markings with Maltese Crosses at either end. The right side of the barrel lug is roll-stamped "+SCHOFIELD'S Pats JUNE 20th 71. APR 22nd 73+" in a single line. Smith & Wesson manufactured 5,285 Second Model Schofield revolvers under the U.S. Government contract.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 60% plus original blue finish overall. The barrel shows thinning from holster use and the balance is a mottled gray patina with only minor handling marks down the length. All markings are crisp and clear. The frame retains nearly all original blue finish with wear limited to the high edges. The hammer and trigger guard exhibit vibrant flashes of original case colors. The grips are very good to excellent with only minor varnish loss and a few slight pressure marks. Both cartouches are clear. This is an exceptional example of a SFPD marked Smith & Wesson 2nd Model Schofield.
