Description:

This is a rare example of a first model U.S. Navy Hotchkiss rifle. Only 1,474 of these rifles were manufactured by Winchester and Springfield for the U.S. Navy. The actions and buttplates were supplied by Winchester, while the barrels, stocks, sights and mountings were supplied and assembled by Springfield Armory. The distinguishing features of the first model are the one-piece stock with safety and magazine cutoff device in button style unit on the right side. The breech end of the barrel is stamped with the letter "R" and "US" with anchor above the "V/P/eagle head" proofs. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the three line Winchester address and patent dates marking. "U" marked barrel bands and "R" marked rear sight base. The stock has two barrel bands, sling swivels and steel forend cap. The rifle has an iron ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel, barrel bands, and buttplate retain 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The remaining metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina. The revarnished stock is very good with some minor pressure dents. Mechanically excellent.
