Description:

This is an example of an original Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle manufactured circa 1890. The lock is marked with the eagle shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The breech is the correct low arch model marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". Pinned blade front sight and Buffington rear sight. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/Eagle head/P" proof and inspector marks. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. Three click tumbler and mounted with a one-piece stock with metal forend cap, two barrel bands, button head cleaning rod and steel "U.S." marked buttplate without compartment. "SWP/1890" cartouche on the left wrist and circled script "P" on the underside behind the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel and lock retain 40% thin original blue finish with a smooth brown and gray patina on the balance. The replaced trigger guard and lower tang retain 90% original blue finish with some minor flaking and spotting. The stock is also very good with a moderate chip on the toe and overall scattered minor dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is very good.
