Description:

This is a fine example of a Michigan National Guard issued Remington-Lee Model 1899 bolt action Rifle. 1,001 of these rifles were shipped in 1898 with another 1,000 shipped in 1899. These Guard rifles are found in the 100,001 to 102,200 serial number range and have an interesting history after the Michigan Quartermaster General reported in December 1900 that the Guard was unsatisfied with the rifles. The rifles remained in service during WWI as drill rifles for the Michigan Naval Militia. After the war, the rifles were given to veteran organizations with some being sold to dealers while others were used by guards for the White Pine Copper Co. during the labor strikes of the 1920s and 1930s. This rifle has standard Remington receiver markings and the front barrel band is marked "U". The rear sight has a low base graduated from 200 to 700 yards and a leaf graduated to 1,900 yards. Mounted on a smooth straight grip stock, with handguard and crescent buttplate. The comb is stamped with the number "28" along with a hand marked number "13" and the buttplate tang is stamped with the number "13". The magazine has three grooves with takedown tool. Included is a combination tool for the upper barrel band screw. This rifle is consecutively numbered to another Michigan National Guard Model 1899 Rifle that is in this auction and is pictured in Eugene Myszkowski's book THE REMINGTON-LEE RIFLE", page 54.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 60% plus original blue finish with the balance a mottled gray patina. The otherwise fine wood has had a coat of protective varnish applied with a number of minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
