Cased, engraved, pair of Webley & Scott RIC solid frame double-action revolvers manufactured c. 1870. The revolvers have round barrels with flat tops and half-moon front sights, solid frames with sighting grooves on the top straps and loading gates on the left sides, six-shot cylinders with locking notches on the front ends and centrally mounted, external extractors. The one-piece, walnut grips are deeply checkered and have steel butt caps with integral lanyard loops. The revolvers have a high polish blue finish with bright-finished loading gates, hammers, triggers and ejectors. The edges of the muzzles, forward portions of the cylinders, sides of the frames and top straps, bottoms of the trigger guards and butt caps are engraved with delicate, English scrollwork and double-line borders. The left side of each revolver frame is stamped with the serial number above the "Winged Bullet/W&S" trademark. "WEBLEY'S/PATENT" is stamped in an oval below the trademark, The gunmaker's name and address: "J, VENABLES & SON/ST. ALDATES, OXFORD" is engraved on either side of the top strap sighting grooves. British proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left sides of the barrels and above each chamber on the cylinders. Revolver "A" has the full serial number "7544" stamped on the frame and the partial serial number "544" stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. Revolver "B" has the full serial number, "7460" stamped on the left side of the frame and the partial serial number "460" stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. The revolvers are complete with an English style oak case. The case lid is inlaid with a circular brass escutcheon and the edges are reinforced with brass screws. The case interior has five compartments and is lined with blue felt. An engraved "J. VENABLES & SON" label is attached to the inside of the lid. The case contains: (1) glass oil bottle with pewter top, (2) five center-fire cartridges with lead bullets and (3) screw-driver with steel blade and ebony handle.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. Both of the attractive revolvers show matching condition and retain 70% of the original high polish blue finish. The bright finished components have scattered age discoloration and traces of surface rust. The delicate scroll engraving and the roll-stamped W&S marking are crisp. The very fine grips exhibit minor handling marks and the checkering is sharp. The actions of both revolvers are crisp and function perfectly. The case exterior is in fine overall condition with light-moderate handling wear. The case interior is in very fine condition. The lining is bright with scattered compression marks and oil stains. The maker's label has several light oil stains and one tear. One compartment lid is missing. The oil bottle is in very good condition and the screw-driver handle has an age crack. This is a very fine pair of high quality, cased Webley & Scott RIC revolvers with extensive engraving.
