Description:

Manufactured in 1908, this is an original unaltered Smith and Wesson First Model 44 Hand Ejector with the very desirable "Triple Lock" mechanism. These revolvers were manufactured from 1908 to 1915 with sales extending into 1917. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address and patent markings, with "44 S&W SPECIAL CTG." marked on the left side and correctly no markings on the right side. It has the standard "S&W" trade mark logo on the right side plate. The early features are the five screw frame, the shrouded ejector housing, the smooth grip straps, square butt, thin trigger with the smooth face, fixed round blade front sight, and of course the "Triple Lock" mechanism. It has matching serial numbers on the back of the cylinder, inside the barrel shroud and the bottom of the butt. The crane and frame cutout are also both matching "2020" assembly numbers. Fitted with checkered walnut grips with a diamond pattern around the screw. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, 44 S&W Special caliber, 6 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish, checkered non-medallion walnut grips and that it was shipped from the factory to E.K. Tryon Co., Philadelphia, Pa. on July 8, 1908.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 85% original blue finish with a large area on the right side that has flaked and there is a smooth gray patina on the exposed surface. The cylinder retains 50% original blue finish with a smooth brownish gray patina on the balance. The frame retains 75% original blue finish with some light flaking and areas of smooth brown patina on the grip straps. Overall there are a few small minor dings and light scratches. Most of the original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger. The grips are excellent with a few minor handling marks and very crisp checkering. The markings are crisp and clear. The mechanics are excellent.
