Description:

Black canvas exterior, with "Photographs" on the cover. The majority of the contents relate to a series of German and Turkish military exercises which took place circa 1900-1912, of which Captain Samuel Shartle, U.S. Military Attaché to Berlin and reported owner of this album, was an observer. Of particular note are a set of photographs from German exercises from 1909 and 1910, the former featuring high quality shots of Kaiser Wilhelm observing the action from horseback, and the latter featuring Wilhelm accompanied by no less than Theodore Roosevelt, then on his grand tour of Africa and Europe before his Bull Moose campaign. Also pictured are a wide assortment of German and Turkish commanding officers, a spectrum of foreign military observers, several shots from the Philippines (including one of Charles Lindburgh laying a wreath), newspaper clippings of the same events, some of Captain Shartle's military credentials, and a copy of Stars and Stripes from 10 January 1919, featuring a eulogy for the recently lost President Roosevelt on the front page.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The bulk of the photographs are free of tearing, foxing or fading, though a few show damage or are loose from their page. The newspaper shows tears and foxing along the edges and folds. Image quality overall is very high.
