Description:

Included in this lot are USAF General Curtis E. LeMay's autograph, four star general rank insignia and rocket badge. Curtis E. LeMay is perhaps the most controversial General in Air Force history and was the Vice Presidential running mate of American Independent Party candidate George Wallace in 1968. LeMay was enrolled in the ROTC program at Ohio State University in the 1920s and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Corps Reserve in October 1929 and received a regular commission in the U.S. Army Air Corps in January 1930. World War II brought LeMay rapid promotion and increased responsibilities. He is best known for planning and executing a massive bombing campaign against cities in Japan which brought him both fame and disrepute. During the post-war years, LeMay oversaw the successful Berlin Airlift and reorganized the Strategic Air Command into a powerful instrument of nuclear war. LeMay ended his career in the Air Force as Chief of Staff under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. LeMay's autograph is on a 3" x 5" plain note card. The General rank insignia and rocket badge are attached to the note card. LeMay received the rank of General on October 29, 1951 and the rocket badge recognizes commissioned officers and enlisted personnel of the USAF who qualified as missile personnel trained in the launching of land based nuclear weapons under the direction of the National Command Authority. Included is biographical information pertaining to LeMay's military career. Previously from the Dale C. Anderson collection.
