Description:

This Winchester Model 1886 rifle was manufactured in 1906. This rifle has a rare combination of special order features and is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes it as "Rifle/33 caliber/20-inch, round barrel/Plain trigger/Plain pistol grip/Plain checkered stock/Lyman combination front and Lyman rear sights/1/2 magazine" and "Rifle butt". The letter states that the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on December 1, 1906". The barrel, half-magazine, forend cap and receiver are blued. The hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate have a casehardened finish. The select walnut forearm and pistol grip stock have "Style I" checkering with a single checkered diamond under the forearm and a single checkered panel on either side of the pistol grip. The pistol grip has a hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The barrel is fitted with a Lyman folding combination front sight with ivory bead and a sporting style rear sight. A folding Lyman "Combination Tang Peep Sight" is mounted on the receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A..PAT.OCT.14.1884.JAN.20.1885." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The left side of the barrel is marked "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" in two lines below the rear sight. The caliber: "33 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark is stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver. The Winchester 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number "139728" on the lower tang behind the tang screw. The lower receiver tang is stamped with the assembly number "272OFC" and the stock and buttplate are stamped with matching "272" assembly marks. Winchester Model 1886 rifles with short barrels and other special order features are very rare.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains 80% of the blue finish on the barrel, magazine and forearm cap and 50% of the blue finish on the receiver. The finish wear on the receiver is concentrated on contact points on the bottom and lower edges. The case colors on the lever, hammer and buttplate have faded to a silver-gray patina with traces of casehardened finish. The stock and forearm both remain in very fine condition. The checkered panels have light-moderate handling wear and there are several minor handling marks on the stock. This is a rare, fully documented, special order, Winchester Model 1886 rifle in very fine original condition.
