Description:

1) Patented in 1862, the Hanes Excelsior consists of a central ball, ringed with 14 percussion caps and filled with the explosive payload, which is then enclosed in a spherical case. Upon striking the ground, one or more primers are crushed between the ball and case, detonating the explosives. Due to the complete lack of safety devices, using the Excelsior was something of an adventure, and production was limited. 2) Tin box, measuring 2 1/2 x 2 x 1 1/2 inches, with a paper label on the lid marked "100/Du PONT SPECIAL/HAND GRENADE/CAPS".

Rating Definition:

1) Very good, showing a mixed brown patina overall, with some spotting and dings on the outer case. The ball and the caps have been drilled out, otherwise they are good with some mild dents. 2) Good, with some rust on the box, and some staining and minor flakes on the label.
