Manufactured from 1852 to 1855 with an estimated total of 1,857 Model 1851 carbines produced. The carbine has the distinctive box lock hammer mounted inside the breech and hinged Maynard tape primer door located in front of the hammer. The primer door is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTED/1846", top of the barrel is marked "ROBINS&/LAWRENCE", and the top of the receiver at the breech is marked "RC". The upper tang is marked "C. SHARPS/PATENT/1848" followed by the serial number and is tapped for sight mounting. Fixed sights with a filled front sight dovetail. Brass barrel band, patch box and buttplate and smooth forearm and straight grip stock.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The carbine is mostly a streaked artificial smooth gray patina overall with pitting present on the barrel. The brass has a bright appearance. The primer door does not latch. The revarnished stock has a hairline crack on the forearm and a repair near the upper tang with some minor handling marks. Mechanically functions, but tape primer door does not stay closed.
