Description:

This is a fine example of a Colt Commercial Production Model 1860 Army revolver that was manufactured in 1867. The revolver has a three-screw frame and lacks the yoke cut-outs in the recoil shields and bottom of the back strap found on Civil War U.S. contract Model 1860 Army revolvers. The hammer spur has bordered knurling. The barrel, cylinder and back strap have the Colt high polish commercial blue finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened. The brass trigger guard is silver plated. The one-piece walnut grip is varnished with a high polish piano finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one line legend "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped on the left side of the frame and "44 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The rebated cylinder is roll-stamped with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT No". The edge of the cylinder is roll-stamped "ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843." in small letters. The full serial number, "164172" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and the back strap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number, "4172". All of the visible serial numbers match.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 70% of the original blue and casehardened finish. The barrel retains much of the original high polish blue finish with some bright scattered patches of pitting and some finish loss on the right side of the barrel near the rammer plunger. The rebated portion of the cylinder has 40% of the blue finish and nearly all of the roll-engraved naval scene. The back strap has 75% of the blue finish with thinning on contact points. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain 75% of the original casehardened finish with strong case colors. There is scattered flash pitting on the right side of the barrel lug, the bottom of the loading lever plunger and the cylinder. All of the cylinder safety pins are intact and the percussion nipples show minimal flash pitting. The revolver shows minimal firing wear and the flash pitting appears to be the result of one failure to clean the weapon after firing. The brass trigger guard has traces of the silver-plated finish in protected areas. The grip is in excellent condition, with wear limited to some minor varnish flaking and one minor dent on the right heel of the grip. This is an attractive example of a late production civilian Colt Model 1860 Army revolver.
