Description:

This dress uniform and flight suit with personal effects belonged to U.S. Marine Corps pilot Captain Charles J. "Sly" Magill who is a 1991 Persian Gulf War fighter pilot credited with shooting down an Iraqi MiG-29 Fulcrum. On exchange duty with the U.S. Air Force's 58th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 33rd Tactical Fighter Wing, USMC Top Gun graduate, Capt. Charles Magill, lead a group of eight F-15 Eagles during a mission on the morning of January 17, 1991. The purpose of the mission was to provide air cover for a strike package against Al Taqaddum and Al Assad airfields in Iraq. Before the strike package of F-16s, F-15s, F-4Gs, and EF-111s reached their targets, Magill was alerted by an E-3 Sentry that two Iraqi MiG-29 Fulcrums were in the area. The Marine Corps Captain split his flight into two four-ship formations with one formation continuing to the airfields while the other formation with Magill leading turned toward the two MiGs. Magill and his wingman, Air Force Captain Rhory Draeger, engaged the MiGs after evading enemy surface-to-air missiles with each pilot scoring an air-to-air victory. For his actions, Magill was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Capt. Magill was the first and only Marine to achieve an air-to-air kill during the 1991 Persian Gulf War and is the last aerial victory for a Marine aviator since the Vietnam War. As of 2010, Magill's F-15 (85-0107) still flies with the USAF. As part of the 44th Fighter Squadron at Kadena Air Base, the F-15 bears a green kill star for the 1991 mission below the canopy rail on the left side. Magill's dress service coat has USMC lapel insignia, Captain bars on the shoulders and a gold clutch back pilot wing on the left chest. The coat has a Saco label. The coat is complete with a shirt, tie, Captain's garrison cap, and a pair of trousers. The shirt has a Great Northern tag and Magill's name is hand written on the laundry tag. The trousers have a Saco tag. Magill's summer flight suit is also included. The size 38R flight suit has Magill's name tag on the left chest and Captain bars on the shoulders. Comes with 4x6 photograph of Magill's F-15, 11x14 photograph of Magill standing in front of his F-15, two Captain bars, USMC lapel insignia, and Magill's dog tag.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The dress uniform is in excellent condition showing little wear. The flight suit is also in excellent condition. A historic and desirable display piece for an advanced aviation collection.
