Description:

This is a very nice example of a World War II Type 2 Japanese takedown "Paratrooper" rifle. These rifles were based on the Type 99 rifle series and were designed to have a removable barrel so that they could be stored in a canvas parachutist's jump bag (not included) for use by Paratroopers. These rifles were manufactured at the Toriimatsu factory under control of the Nagoya Arsenal. The top of the receiver has the Chrysanthemum (which is intact) and Kanji markings for Type "2" rifle". The left side of the receiver, breech end of the barrel and both halves of the take-down mechanism are correctly marked with the matching assembly number, "911". The receiver side wall is stamped with the early serial number (3096) along with the Nagoya arsenal factory mark. It has the later production tangent rear sight graduated to 1,500 meters with the thin anti-aircraft wings, peep sight and an inverted "V" front with guards. The front barrel band is the two screw model and the rear is the later plain slotted pattern and it has the correct, plum shaped pattern bolt. It is fitted with the late war hardwood, two piece stock with the cupped steel buttplate, side mounted sling swivels with the drain hole in front of the trigger guard, and a one piece handguard.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 70% of the faded original blue finish remaining with general light blue wear on the edges and high spots, with minor thinning on the exposed area of the receiver, takedown mechanism and triggerguard/floorplate. The stock and handguard are both in very good condition with 90% of their original wartime stock finish, showing minor handling marks and light pressure dents overall, with a clear stock proof behind the pistol grip area. It has matching numbers on the various parts as noted above, except the complete bolt assembly which is numbered "095", which is only one number off the rifle serial number. The bolt however appears to be completely original to the rifle as it has the same amount of blue loss and wear patterns as the rifle, clearly indicating its been with the rifle for some time. A very nice example of a early production Type 2 Paratrooper rifle.
