Description:

Manufactured in 1863 and 1864. The upper right side of the frame is inscribed "Presented to Lieut. Wm Ragan" and "at Camp McClellan" on the left side. Ragan was in the 54th Regiment, Company C of the Virginia Volunteers, Confederate States of America and according to documents provided by the consignor, (all accompany the revolver), on October 22, 1862 at the rank of Captain was deemed incapable of performing his duties of a soldier due to serious health issues. There is also a copy of a pay voucher for Captain Ragan from July 1, 1862 to October 22, 1862. Marked "B.A.CO. PATENT APRIL 14TH 1863" on top of the barrel, the serial number is marked on the front of the frame. The matching assembly number "I/39" is marked on the frame under the grip and stamped on the inside of each grip panel. A collectors number "KM368" is marked on the butt. This denotes item number "368" of the famous Karl Moldenaur Collection. Cone front sight and frame notch rear sight. 5-round cylinder with chamber sleeves. For loading and unloading the sleeve is pushed forward into a fixed ramrod. The brass frame has the standard scroll engraving and the top strap has a simple line and scallop border engraving. Blue barrel and cylinder, silver frame and casehardened hammer and spur trigger. Fitted with smooth two-piece varnished walnut bag shaped grips. Comes with an original green hinged lid box with the Slocum's Patent side-loading revolver label on the inside of the lid, cleaning rod and wooden handle screwdriver.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 75% plus original blue finish with some muzzle wear and a small amount of minor pitting. The cylinder has a smooth dark patina. The frame retains 60% plus original silver plating with an aged patina on the exposed brass. The grips are also very fine with most of the original varnish and showing only light handling marks. The markings, engraving and inscription are clear and crisp. The action is excellent. The box is fine with some corner and edge wear and a separated corner on the lid and box.
