Manufactured circa 1864-1866, this particular revolver is a Type I with the standard, or heavy brass frame and is chambered for the 42 caliber cup-primed cartridge. The top of the barrel rib is marked "PLANT'S MFG. CO NEW HAVEN CT.", the left rear barrel flat is marked "MERWIN & BRAY. NEW-YORK" and the patent dates are marked on the cylinder. The matching serial number is marked on the butt, rear face of the cylinder and stamped on the inside of each grip panel. The unique design of these revolvers featured a combination of front loading and interchangeable cylinders allowing for firing a metallic cartridges or muzzle loading percussion. Blade front and full frame notch rear sights, silver plated frame, with blue remaining parts and fitted with smooth varnished rosewood grips.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel and cylinder retain 95% plus bright original high polish blue finish with some minor muzzle and high edge wear, some minor flaking on the cylinder, as well as a small area of smooth gray patina. The frame retains 95% original age darkened silver plating with edge wear and some minor thinning on the top and back strap. The grips are also excellent with 98% original varnish, showing some very minor lower edge wear, a minor age crack developing on the left panel, some mild crazing and light handling marks. The cylinder doesn't always rotate when the hammer is cocked. The markings are crisp and clear.
