U.S. marked and inspected, Colt 2nd Model Dragoon Revolver manufactured in 1851. The revolver has a military blue finish on the barrel and cylinder, casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer, brass square back trigger guard and brass back strap. The one-piece martially inspected walnut grip has an oil finish. The top barrel flat is marked "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-" in one line. The left side of the frame is stamped with "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines above a "U.S." property mark. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Ranger and Indian battle scene and "MODEL U.S.M.R" and "COLT'S PATENT". The loading lever, barrel lug, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, back strap and left grip heel are all stamped with a small "H" Ordnance Sub-Inspector's mark. A small "Q" is stamped on the trigger guard behind the serial number and an "R" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. The full serial number "9832" is located on the loading lever, bottom of the barrel lug, barrel wedge, cylinder pin, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. All of the serial numbers match. The lower left side of the grip is stamped with the Ordnance sub-inspector's script initials "JH" in an oval. The script "WAT" initials of the Ordnance final inspector are stamped in an oval on the lower right side of the grip. Colt manufactured about 2700 2nd Model Dragoon Revolvers in 1850-51. Only two thousand of these revolvers were manufactured for Ordnance contracts and had "U.S." property markings on the frame and sub-inspection marks on the major components and inspector and sub-inspector marks on the grips. The 2nd Model Dragoon had the lowest production of the Model 1848 Dragoon revolver series. The accoutrements include: a Colt's Patent marked bullet mold and a Colt's patent marked flask. The flask is a late production Colt Walker flask which shows the décor of massed flags, mortar, field piece, drum, and crossed arms, with no star between the words Colt and Patent. The design is on both faces. The receptacle door is marked "COLT'S/PATENT". The base of the plunger type charger is marked "waj". It has the carrying rings. This is a late production Walker type flask and would have been used with other and later arms as well.

Excellent. The revolver is in outstanding condition and retains 90% plus of the original blue finish. The left side of the barrel lug has some minor age spotting and there is some extremely minor finish loss on the right side of the barrel and the right side of the barrel lug at the wedge slot. Cylinder wear is limited to some very minor flash pitting on the rear face and nipples. The cylinder pins are in near-perfect condition. Nearly all of the roll-stamped cylinder scene remains and the cylinder retains 95% or more of the original blue finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer have 75% of the original subdued case colors. Wear is limited to some silvering on the loading lever plunger and some very minor flash pitting on the left side of the hammer. The brass trigger guard and back strap have an attractive un-polished aged patina. The wedge and trigger guard screws have most of the fiery niter blue finish. All of the markings on the barrel and frame are sharp. The grip is in excellent condition with scattered, minor storage marks on the left side. The Ordnance inspection marks on the grip are strong and legible. The action is tight and functions perfectly. Flask is fine, with a few minor dents and some minor dings; the metal has a polished appearance.

Colt Second Model Dragoon Revolver manufactured in 1851 as part of a contract with the Ordnance Department for 2,000 revolvers. The revolver features the distinctive combination of a square-back brass trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops that are characteristic of 2nd Model Dragoon Revolvers. The barrel and cylinder have the dull military blue finish and the loading lever, frame and hammer have a mottled dark gray casehardened finish. The trigger guard and back strap are brass and the one-piece grip is oil-finished walnut. The cylinder is roll-stamped with the Ranger and Indian fight scene along with the legend: "MODEL U.S.M.R./COLT'S PATENT". The top of the barrel lug is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-" reading from the muzzle toward the breech. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped "COLT'S/PATENT/U.S." in three lines. A small "H" Ordnance sub-inspection mark is stamped on the back strap, trigger guard bow, cylinder and the bottom of the barrel lug. The left side of the grip heel and left side of the grip are stamped with a small "B" sub-inspection mark. A small "G" is stamped on the trigger guard behind the serial number. A faint, script oval "WAT" final inspection mark is visible on the lower right side of the grip. A faint and illegible oval sub-inspector's stamp is visible on the lower left side of the grip. The serial number "9874" is stamped in small numerals on the loading lever, bottom of the barrel lug, cylinder arbor pin, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. The barrel wedge is stamped with the partial serial number "874". All of the serial numbers match. Several illegible initials are lightly scratched on the right side of the grip at the junction of the frame and back strap.

Excellent. The barrel has 85% plus of the original military blue finish. Wear is limited to some scattered and very light pitting on the top of the barrel and left side of the lug, light storage marks on the barrel and some minor dents and scratches on the sides of the lug near the wedge slot. The cylinder has 30% blue with the balance a nice silver-gray patina; nearly all of the roll-engraved Ranger and Indian scene and legend are present. All of the safety pins remain. There is light flash pitting on the cylinder face and on the percussion nipples. The loading lever retains 70% of the original casehardened finish. The frame and hammer have about 85% of the original case colors with some scattered age discoloration and some light flash pitting on the left side of the hammer. The frame and grip screws are in fine condition and show strong traces of the original niter blue finish. The back strap and trigger guard have a mellow age patina. The Colt legend, patent markings, serial numbers and Ordnance sub-inspection marks are sharp and clear. The grip is in fine condition with a small and very old chip in the right side near the heel. The Ordnance inspection marks on the sides of the grip are faint but visible. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. A pair of martially marked 2nd Dragoon Revolvers are an extremely rare combination and to find them in this outstanding condition is rarely encountered.
