Description:

This is a like new Smith carbine that was manufactured by the American Machine Works of Springfield, Massachusetts. The Smith Carbine was one of the most important Federal Cavalry carbines. Production of these carbines was almost entirely consumed by government contracts. A total of approximately 30,362 Smith Carbines were purchased by the United States during the Civil War. The left side of the receiver is marked with the standard address and patent dates. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame and barrel. The barrel is fitted with a blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight with an "H" stamped on the base. The "H" is repeated on the base of the saddle ring bar. Blue finish with casehardened hammer and frame, and niter blue barrel latch, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the receiver and mounted with a smooth oil finished walnut forearm secured by a single barrel band and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. The left stock wrist is marked with a sharp boxed script "LFR" and oval "JH" cartouche and a small stamped "JH" directly ahead of the buttplate tang.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The carbine retains 99% plus original blue finish with a small area of small scratches on the barrel near the muzzle. The barrel latch retains most of the original bright niter blue finish with loss due to flaking. The hammer and receiver retain 99% original bright case colors. The buttplate is a mix of bright original blue finish and smooth brown patina. The wood is also excellent plus with only a few minor pressure dents and handling marks. The markings and cartouches are sharp. Mechanically excellent. In the many years writer has been doing descriptions he cannot recall a Smith carbine in such pristine condition. You will never see another example as extraordinary as this one!
