Description:

1) Gilt accented, file-tipped dagger, 17 3/4 inches overall, with a 12 1/4 inch blade. The upper third is checkered on the sides, and the lower 2/3rds are engraved with flowers and hunting accoutrements on a niter blue field with gold highlights. Gilt brass hilt, with raised scroll and floral patterns. The a gilt brass fitted, brown leather sheath. 2) Frederico Pichinio-marked dagger, 18 inches in overall length with a 13 inch double edged blade. The lower half of the blade is etched and gold washed, with four makers stamps and "FREDERICO PICHINIO" in the single fullers. The Picchinios were a family of arms makers based in Madrid, with Fredrico being active circa 1550-1580. Fitted with an elaborate brass hilt, with the cross guard rendered as a pair of serpents entwined around 5 turquoise stones, 3 additional stones on the pommel flanked by raised cockatrices, grotesque faces between the guards, raised scrollwork, and a rendering of a man with a matchlock on the right side. With a green cloth upholstered sheath, fitted with raised decorated brass fittings and a set of three stones on the back of the throat. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection

Rating Definition:

1) Fine, with 40% of the original niter blue and gold finish, showing heavy spotting on the blade, mild wear on the hilt, and some scuffing and cracks on the leather. 2) Very good. Some dark spotting is visible on the blade, with minor wear on the gold. The brass shows a finely aged patina, with excellent detail. The sheath is fair, with mild stains and scuffs on the material.
