Description:

Measuring 62 1/2 inches overall and produced by an unknown maker, this weapon combines a large bore percussion musket with a sword. The barrel has a cannon muzzle and a set of three ribbed balls spaced out across the length. An elongated engraved tang plate connects the barrel with the blade section, with a fixed rear sight. The lockplate and hammer are also scroll engraved, with an illegible marking below the floral decorated, high fence flash pan, and are installed in a checkered pistol grip stock, with a metal forearm tip, and a checkered bird's head butt with ivory inserts. Extending from the pistol grip is the blade, 1 7/8 inch across at the ricasso and 28 inches long, double edged with a spear point and light engraving around the base. When held for use as a sword, the balls on the barrel serve as a pommel and handrest, and when oriented for firing, the blade rests between the shooter's chest and arm.

Rating Definition:

Good, with a mixed brown patina overall, showing areas of gray and scattered handling marks. Grip is good, with a crack extending from the lock plate to the tip, minor chipping and handling marks. Mechanically very good. Writer cannot recall ever auctioning a piece like this!
