Description:

From the 18th century with a shortened 17th century European blade, this sword is a result of cultural exchanges between India and Europe. The Firangi combines a traditional hilt style with a straight, fullered blade. 34 1/4 inches long, with a straight 30 inch triple-fuller blade. The hilt is iron, with over 80% coverage koftgari-pattern gold decoration, showing floral designs on the ends of the rounded 3 3/8 inch crossguard, over the contoured grip section, and on the pommel disc. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine, with a mixed gray patina on the blade and scattered pitting the blade may have been shortened as the fullers run to the point. A very beautiful example of a cultural exchange. The hilt is very good, with a well aged dark patina on the iron and over 95% of the original gold.
