Description:

Originating in Ceylon, Sri-Lanka in the 16th Century, the piha-kaetta uses a clipped drop point to bring the point nearly directly in line with the edge, moving the overall weight of the weapon forward for cutting applications. Measuring 12 1/8 inches long, with a 5 1/8 inch long blade, showing a short oval fuller on each side, which interfaces with a wraparound engraved gold panel, 2 1/2 inches long, showing scroll and punch dot patterns. The collar has deeply cut wave pattern designs along the leading face, and a light border engraving and a bronze pommel cap with scroll designs. The grips are carved ivory, with the blade tang gold plated and patterned to match and golden starburst accents at the rear. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection

Rating Definition:

Good. A mixed gray patina is visible on the blade, with pitting and a small crack above the tip. Some minor loss of gold is visible along the edge, with over 95% of the original metal in place. Grips are good, with some filler around the pommel, light age cracking, and attractive color and grain.
