U.S. Contract Colt Cavalry Model Single Action revolver that was manufactured in 1891.The 4,000 Cavalry Model Single Action revolvers manufactured by Colt between January 1890 and April 1891 were the last Single Action revolvers purchased by the U.S. Army. This revolver was sub-inspected by Rinaldo A. Carr (R.A.C.) and inspected by Captain Stanhope E. Blunt (S.E.B). The revolver has the standard military blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, hammer and loading gate are casehardened. The screws and trigger are niter blue. The one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The revolver has the second style oval ejector rod head introduced at about serial number 113,000 and cavalry type hammer with bordered elongated knurling on the spur and cone-shaped firing pin. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the elongated block address "COLT'S P.T. F. A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt three date, three line patent marks followed by the "U.S." property mark. The sub-inspection mark "R.A.C" is stamped on the underside of the barrel, the bottom of the frame above the serial number, the side of the cylinder and the right heel of grip. "P" proofmarks are stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. "K" Colt inspection marks are stamped on the trigger guard, back strap, underside of the barrel behind the ejector housing stud, the front of the ejector housing and in the hammer well. An "O" inspection mark is also stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The full serial number, "137164" is stamped on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number, "7164" is stamped on the barrel beneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "499". The lower left side of the grip is stamped with the date "1891" above Ordnance final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "SEB" enclosed in a rectangle with rounded ends. The ordnance sub-inspection mark which consists of the script initials "RAC" within a rectangle with rounded ends is stamped on the lower right side of the grip.

Very fine. The revolver retains 75% of the original blue and 60% casehardened finish. The original front sight blade is covered by a period target style front sight that is pinned to the original blade. The remainder of the revolver is all original. The barrel has 85% or more of the military blue finish intact with a sharp legend, proof and inspection marks. There is light to moderate edge wear on the ejector housing and ejector rod head. The cylinder has a silver-gray patina with blue finish in the flutes. The trigger guard has about 40% of the blue finish in protected areas. Contact points on the back strap have a smooth silver-gray patina. The frame retains more than 80% of the casehardened finish with silvering on the recoil shield and loading gate. The hammer has most of the case colors intact. The walnut grip is very good with light to moderate handling wear. The "1891" date and "S.E.B." inspection mark on the left heel are fully legible. The "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark on the right heel is faint but identifiable. The heel of the grip has some minor dents and scratches and the initials "CHE" are lightly carved in the right heel. The action is crisp but the hammer does not hold properly at half-cock. This is a very fine example of an 1891 last year production, "R.A.C." sub-inspected Cavalry Model Single Action revolver.
