Description:

This is a fine example of a Civil War production Model 1860 Spencer carbine that was overhauled by the Springfield Armory c. 1866-1874. The carbine has a blued 22-inch barrel, color casehardened upper barrel band, receiver, lever, hammer and buttplate. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The barrel has a block mounted brass front sight blade and a folding leaf rear sight. The barrel band lacks the sling swivel fitted on later production Model 1865 Spencer carbines. A sling bar and ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver and the stock. The standard sling swivel is mounted on the underside of the stock. This carbine was one of approximately 12,000 Model 1860 carbines overhauled by the Springfield Armory following the Civil War and has the Stabler magazine cut-off added by Springfield to all the over-hauled Spencer carbines. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the Springfield final inspection mark which consists of the initials "TJS" in a rectangle behind the sling bar. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped: SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS./PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860" in three lines. The serial number, "29840" is marked on the top of the receiver behind the breech. The Model 1860 Spencer carbine was the most popular and advanced cavalry carbine issued during the Civil War. By the end of the war a large percentage of the Federal cavalry were armed with the seven-shot Spencer carbines. The Stabler cut-off was designed to allow the Spencer carbine to be fired as a single shot breech-loader with the seven-round magazine held in reserve. The Springfield Armory modified Model 1860 Spencer carbines and the late production Model 1865 Spencer carbines were widely issued to the ten U.S. Cavalry regiments on the frontier following the Civil War including Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment.

Rating Definition:

Fine as arsenal refurbished. The carbine retains 60% of the Springfield Armory blue and 40% casehardened finish. The barrel has most of the blue finish intact with some scattered spot of surface rust and age discoloration behind the front sight. The upper barrel band, receiver, breech block, hammer and lever retain nearly 95% of the muted case colors. The case colors on the butt plate have aged to a mottled dark gray patina. The magazine tube has most of the bright finish. The bore is mirror bright. The factory markings on the top of the receiver are legible but show polishing during overhaul. The stock and forearm are in very good-excellent condition with scattered, minor, handling and storage marks. The Ordnance final inspection mark of the left wrist is crisp. This is a fine example of the Model 1860 Spencer carbines issued to the U.S. Cavalry, on the frontier following the Civil War.
