Description:

This is a beautiful example of a very early 1900 Swiss military contract Luger with the ultra rare "A" suffix serial number that remains in exceptional condition. These early "A" suffix serial numbers pistols are discussed on pages 27-31 of the book "The Swiss Variations" by Fred Datig he indicated that these pistols, through the research of Michael AmRhyn of Lucerne Switzerland, determined that these "A" suffix Swiss Lugers were actually the earlier "E" prefix Lugers (From the E588 to E735 serial number range) that were numbered by the Swiss Government, by the addition of the "A" suffix. The rational for doing this has never been explained, however they are considered very rare with very few ever reported, mostly in Switzerland with a handful in the U.S. There is no indication or whereabouts of any pistol manufactured with serial numbers from "E1 to E587". As noted on the list in the referenced book this Luger serial number "5072A" was originally serial number "E672". This pistol retains it's original 7.65 mm Luger auto caliber chambering with the 4 7/8 inch rapid taper barrel, old style long frame with the flat mainspring, early dished toggles with the toggle lock, recessed flat breechblock, and grip safety. This pistol also still retains the original narrow trigger. The top of the chamber area has the "Swiss cross" in sunburst crest with the DWM scroll monogram on the front toggle link. The left side of the barrel extension is stamped with the small Swiss cross and cross over "V" control or firing proof of Herr Vogelsang the Swiss inspector at the DWM factory. A larger "P" is stamp on the front of the trigger guard indicating it was released from the military. The full serial number "5072A" is stamped on the underside of the barrel with the last two or three digits of the serial number stamped on all the various small parts. It is complete with one original Swiss pattern, nickel plated magazine with the unnumbered wooden Swiss base and an original Swiss Army contract holster and shoulder strap. The back of the holster is stamped "M.KAISER/ZURICH".

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% of the arsenal blue overall with just minor edge and high spot wear. The smaller parts retain 90% of their straw colors. The grips are excellent with nice distinct checkering and with some very minor nicks and handling marks. The holster is very fine with nice clear markings with tight stitching showing only minor wear and use overall. A rare example of an unusual/scarce Swiss Model 1900 Luger pistol rig.
