Description:

This is a fine example of an early production Smith & Wesson No. 2 Old Army revolver with the desirable and rare top strap with two pins. The Old Army revolver was introduced in 1861 and the low serial number "689" would indicate first year production making this example a Civil War production revolver. The top of the barrel rib has the one line Springfield address and the cylinder has the one line patent dates marking. The serial number is marked on the butt with the matching number stamped on the inside of the right grip panel. The matching assembly number "J7" is marked on the frame under the grip, front cylinder face and back of the barrel lug. Blade and notch sights and fitted with smooth rosewood varnished grips. Comes with a canvas flap holster with leather strap closure. The front of the holster has hand written markings "? FRANK SHOWMAN/1933" and another difficult to rear line.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 60% original blue finish mixed with smooth brown and gray patina. The grips are very fine with 98% original varnish remaining and showing some minor lower edge wear and a few very minor pressure dents and handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The holster is good with some stains and edge fraying. The flap securing hole is torn. A rare and early "Two Pin" No. 2 Army manufactured early in 1861 which was well taken care of through the war years and beyond.
