Description:

Smith & Wesson .38 Winchester DA revolver with factory letter that states this revolver, serial number 2, was shipped from S&W to William Read & Sons, Boston, Massachusetts on August 22, 1901 and had a 6.5 inch barrel, blue finish and black hard rubber grips. The S&W .38 Winchester DA revolvers utilized the same components as the S&W .44 DA First Model Revolvers but were chambered for the .38-40 WCF cartridge. Smith & Wesson manufactured 276 .38 DA revolvers between 1900 and 1910. The revolver has the S&W commercial blue finish on the barrel, frame trigger guard and cylinder. The trigger and hammer have a casehardened finish. The original checkered black hard rubber grips have been replaced with two-piece mother-of-pearl grips. The top of the barrel rib is roll-stamped with the two line S&W legend with Maltese Crosses at either end. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped "38 WINCHESTER CTG". The serial number, "2" is stamped on the bottom of the butt, the rear face of the cylinder, the back of the barrel and the underside of the barrel catch. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The revolver retains 75% plus of the original commercial blue finish. The finish is thin on contact points and has faded to a blue-brown patina on the grip straps and lower portion of the frame. The hammer and trigger have strong case colors vibrant in flashes. The grips are very good, there is a small chip in the top of the right grip. All of the markings are sharp. Mechanically excellent. This is a very good example of the second S&W .38 Winchester DA revolver manufactured.
