Description:

Manufactured from 1861 to 1874. The top of the barrel rib is marked with the one line address and the three patent dates around the cylinder. The matching serial number is marked on the butt and inside of the right grip panel, and the matching assembly number "40" is marked on the frame under the grip, front cylinder face and rear of the barrel lug. The back strap is inscribed "Presented to/Lieut. J.B. Wetherill Co. E, 2nd Regt. E.M.D.M.". Blade front and notch rear sights, all nickel finish and fitted with varnished rosewood grips. Research identifies "E.M.D.M." as the Enrolled Militia, Defenses of Memphis, an armed body active from 1863 to 1865 in Memphis, Tennessee. An internet search of J.B. Wetherill met with negative results, however, further research may prove fruitful.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as period jeweler refinished with 85% nickel finish with some scattered minor flaking and some edge wear. The grips are excellent with 98% original varnish showing some very minor lower edge wear and a few minor dings and handling marks. The action needs adjustment. The markings are clear. A very attractive and interesting Smith & Wesson Model 2 Army revolver.
