Description:

This is a beautiful example of a U.S. WWII Springfield Armory M1C sniper rifle with M82 Telescopic Sight, original "K-Line" russet leather cheek piece and WWII canvas sling. The M1C sniper rifles were originally developed in mid-late 1944 and were also used in Korea by both the U.S. Army and USMC. This late WWII rifle was overhauled during the Korean Conflict and currently has it's original WWII barrel marked: "SA-4-45" along with the late war Type III rear sight, original unmodified operating rod marked: "D35382-9-SA", an earlier bolt marked D28287-2-SA, trigger housing marked D28290-18-SA, stamped trigger guard and wide base gas cylinder. The scope base/bracket (only) is matching to the rifle and is correctly numbered on the underside "3653790". This rifle has an original WWII all blue G&H mount that has the Griffin & Howe markings on top, numbered "3717277" on the back side. The mount is fitted with an original all blue M82 telescopic sight. This was one of the original WWII scopes issued with this style of sniper rifle. The M82 telescopic sight has the correct post reticle and is roll-stamped in three lines on the left side "TELESCOPE M82/SERIAL NO. 36691/STOCK NO. 84374". The telescope is complete with the rubber eyepiece, sliding sun shade and windage and elevation knob covers with part numbers on the top. The russet leather lace-on cheekpiece is an original late WWII version originally issued with this type of rifle and is marked on top "K-Line", who was the original WWII manufacturer. The rifle is fitted with an original WWII stock that is stamped on the left side with a late WWII boxed "S.A./N.F.R./Crossed Cannon" cartouche, circled "P" firing proof on the pistol grip and a large rack number "139" stamped on the right side. It is complete with a GI cleaning rod set, plastic oiler and grease pot in the butt trap compartment. Nearly all of the M1C sniper rifles were rebuilt by Springfield Armory or other Ordnance facilities during the Korean Conflict. Most of the M1C rifles were destroyed by the Army during the 1980s and only a few hundred M1C rifles were released to the public by the DCM or thru Title 10 exchange programs. This rifle is reported to have been sold by the CMP in the early 1990s.

Rating Definition:

Near mint with 99% of the arsenal refurbished parkerized finish overall. The stock and hand guards are excellent with nice clear sharp cartouches and proofs, and a nice medium brown matching color on the hand guards and stock. The leather cheekpiece is also excellent. The M82 scope and G&H mount both retain 98% plus of their original blue finish, with some minor spotting/freckling of the finish on the front sun shield. The markings and optics are clear and sharp. An excellent example of a very desirable WWII M1 sniper rifle.
