Description:

Springfield Model 1903 National Match (NM) rifle manufactured in 1925. The rifle has the "Style B" pistol grip stock that was installed on 245 M1903 NM rifles between 1925 and 1928. The summary of D.C.M. Rifle Sales 1922-1942 by Springfield Research Service list this rifle as a Special Target, which is a C-type stock with NRA Sporter type buttplate. This rifle has the dark gray-green parkerized finish found on post WWI Springfield Armory rifles. The lower barrel band and band spring are blue and the face of the rear sight leaf and "ON" side of the magazine cut-off are polished bright. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL 1903/1268359". The barrel is roll-stamped: "S A" above the Ordnance "Shell & Flame" insignia and the date "9-24". The barrel muzzle is stamped with the star-gauge mark in the six-o-clock position and the star gauge number, "C/3717" is stamped on the top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight base. The top of the bolt handle is stamped with the steel lot code "WL/3". The last four digits of the serial number "8359" are electro-penciled on the top of the bolt in accordance with NM specifications. The cocking piece and safety have the late block letter markings. The stock has a circled "P" proofmark stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. The rifle has a deeply checkered NM buttplate, grooved trigger and flat elevation and windage knobs. The bolt has the special headless cocking piece and reversed safety that were standard on NM rifles between 1924 and 1930. The rear sight leaf, correctly, does not have the 2,850 yard center notch. The bolt, receiver rails and top of the magazine follower are polished bright in accordance with NM specifications. Armory polishing marks are visible above and below the safety knob. The rifle is fitted with a Lyman 48 micrometer rear sight.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains nearly 98% of the original parkerized finish with only very minor handling wear. The markings on the barrel, receiver, and bolt are crisp. The front sight base and front sight have not been disturbed and have matching alignment marks. The reoiled, replaced B-style stock and forearm are both very fine with minimal handling marks.
