Second Model Winchester lever action rifle that was manufactured in 1867. The octagon barrel has the first style marking "HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/ KING'S-PATENT-MARCH 29. 1866" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number "19686" is stamped on the left side of the receiver tang and covered by the stock. The barrel has a dovetail mounted replacement front sight blade and Henry style folding leaf rear sight. The brass receiver has an indented loading port cover that is retained by a single screw. The brass forearm cap has an integral sling swivel base and the stock is inletted for a sling swivel. The hammer does not have a half-cock notch and has borderless knurling on the spur. The brass crescent buttplate has a sharply pointed heel and hinged brass trap door. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut.

Very good plus. The barrel and magazine have a smooth blue/brown patina. The edges of the barrel are sharp and the barrel markings are clear. The front sight is a replacement; the rear sight is original but the leaf is broken at the base. The barrel markings are crisp. The brass forearm cap, receiver and crescent buttplate are good overall. The brass has a dark untouched highly attractive "mustard" patina. The side plate joints are tight and the edges are free from pry marks. The hammer, trigger and lever have a dark brown patina with some scattered and very fine pitting. The sling swivel is missing from the forearm cap and the sling swivel and base have been removed from the stock. The stock and forearm show moderate-heavy wear and are fair. A 7 1/4-inch splinter is missing from the upper left side of the forearm. This is an attractive example of an early production Winchester Second Model 1866 rifle. These rifles were working guns that saw hard use. This rifle is an above average, good looking example of an early Model 1866 Rifle.
