Description:

Manufactured in 1837 with a total production of only about 2,020. This particular carbine is an earlier production with the implement compartment in the underside area of the buttstock, (no accessories included). It has the sliding bayonet/ramrod under the barrel and the large eye for the sling through the wrist. Standard "J.H. HALL/US/1837" marking on top of the breech block. Fixed offset sights on the barrel and front of the receiver. Brown finished iron mountings and barrel, casehardened breech and mounted with a one-piece full straight grip walnut stock secured by two barrel bands and flat iron buttplate. These carbines were issued to the 2nd U.S. Dragoons for the Florida campaign. They saw extensive use and are seldom encountered in this condition.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel and receiver retain 50% of the original brown lacquer finish, turning an orange tint in areas and there is an area on the left rear of the barrel and on the sides of the receiver that show evidence of cleaning. Most of the original brown finish remains on the lower tang and compartment door. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth dark brown patina. The wood is fine as lightly sanded and re-oiled with a few minor nicks in the area of the toe and overall scattered minor dings. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
