Description:

Originally contracted with William Jenks for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography, Jenks originally tapped N.P. Ames of Springfield to manufacture 1000 Jenks Carbines. Before completing the run, Ames sold the contract and machinery to Eliphat Remington & Sons of Herkimer, New York, who finished the job circa 1847-1848, integrating a Maynard Tape Primer and a redesigned hammer into the design. Blade front and groove rear sights, with the top of the barrel marked "W. JENKS" and "U.S.N/RP/P/1847/CAST-STEEL", "6/37" on the breech arm, "362" inside the primer door, and "REMINGTON'S/HERKIMER/N.Y." on the lock plate behind the primer. Fitted with a saddle ring on the rear trigger guard finial, two brass barrel bands, and a smooth straight grip stock with a faint cartouche opposite the lock and a flat brass buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Showing a mixed brown and gray patina overall, with light pitting and handling marks. A crack is present at the rear of the loading port. Stock is fair as repaired, with mended cracks at the wrist, a few areas of filler material, and scattered dents. Cartouche is lightly visible. Mechanically very good.
