Description:

These carbines were used throughout the Spanish American War and late in the Philippine Insurrection. The side of the receiver is marked "U.S./MODEL 1896, SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" next to serial number. It has the original carbine length stock that is fitted with the original carbine saddle ring and sling bar on the left hand side. It has the original short forearm and early style handguard with the barrel band that protects the rear sight. It is fitted with the correct Model 1896 carbine rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards, that is marked with the letter "C" on the upper right hand corner of the leaf, designating it as a carbine sight with the original blade front sight. There is no visible cartouche on the left side of the stock and there is a single circled gothic "P" proof in the pistol grip area. It has the two of the three pieces for the original cleaning rod and metal oiler in the buttstock.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel shows signs of having been cleaned with traces of original blue finish present overall. The remaining metal surfaces are a mix of smooth mottled gray patina and thin original blue finish. The period re-oiled wood is also good with a wood plug repair at the buttplate tang and overall scattered minor dings, dents, and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is very good.
