Description:

U.S. Army Model 1871 Rolling Block Rifle manufactured by the Springfield Armory. The Springfield Armory produced 10,001 Model 1871 Rifles between 1871 and 1872. The rifle has a National Armory Bright barrel, breechblock, barrel bands, buttplate and cleaning rod. The hammer, receiver and trigger guard have a color casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The rifle has a backward folding rear sight with 1,000 yard center notch. Sling swivels are mounted on the upper barrel band and trigger guard. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the Springfield Armory eagle and shield motif above: "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1872" in three lines. "MODEL 1871" is roll-stamped on the left side of the receiver. Two-line Remington 1864 and 1868 patent markings are lightly roll-stamped on the upper tang. The Ordnance final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "ESA" in an oval is stamped on the left stock wrist. "U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel, buttplate and barrel bands retain nearly all of the "National Armory Bright" finish. The receiver and trigger guard have 95% of the original casehardened finish intact with strong case colors. The receiver markings are sharp and the final inspection mark on the stock wrist is very crisp. The stock and forearm are both excellent with a few minor storage marks and bruises. "F" is stamped in punch-marks on the right side of the stock near the buttplate. This is an excellent example of one of the most desirable variations of the U.S. Springfield Rolling Block military longarms.
