Description:

This is a very fine example of an attractive Richard Jackson of London made percussion sporting rifle. The lock is marked "R Jackson LONDON". The top barrel flat behind the rear sight is marked "RICHD JACKSON 50 PORTMAN PLACE EDGWARE ROAD". The lock plate is engraved with floral scroll patterns with floral scroll bordering. The hammer is engraved with the same pattern and a fish head motif. The trigger guard is engraved with a running stag and a floral scroll border. The rear of the lower tang has the same floral scroll engraving and the finial is a decorative pineapple motif. The barrel tang has a stag lying in the grass and floral scroll engraving below it. The breech plug is engraved with a floral scroll pattern, has a recessed silver hallmark "R JACKSON/LONDON" and a silver inlaid band around the rear. The barrel is fitted with a dovetailed blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards. There is a sliding hammer safety mounted on the lock, extended trigger guard grip spur and wooden ram rod with large brass tip. Brown finished Damascus pattern barrel, casehardened lock, hammer, breech plug, barrel tang and patch box, niter blue hammer safety and bright blue on the remaining parts. Mounted with a nicely figured checkered walnut straight grip half stock with a horn forend, tear drop flats, cheekpiece, iron patch box, sling stud and silver initial oval on the top of the wrist. The buttplate has a 5 inch tang which is engraved with a standing stag in a forest scene

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The barrel retains 90% original brown finish with some edge wear and showing virtually all of the original Damascus pattern. There are a few small areas of minor pitting. With the exception of the patch box, the casehardened parts retain most of the fading original case colors with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The patch box has a mottled gray patina with a small amount of minor pitting and spotting. The trigger guard retains 95% bright original high polish blue finish overall. The buttplate retains 80% original blue finish with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The stock is very fine with some scattered minor dents and scratches. The checkering is very crisp. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
