Description:

1) This sword has a 36 1/2 inch blade with two shallow fullers having "XXX" stamped on each side. There is an unidentified maker's mark that resembles a mace stamped at the ricasso. The 3 3/4 inch long quillons and round pommel are spiral fluted. There is a thumb and knuckle guard attached to the quillons. The grip is leather wrapped over cord. 2) Measuring 54 1/2 inches, with a 46 1/2 inch spear point double edged single fuller blade, marked with a single maker's proof on each side of the ricasso, and the fullers marked "MEFECIT" and "BAPTISTA" (I was made by Baptista). Iron hilt, with ricasso guards extending up from the chiseled, 8 3/4 inch wide ball quillion cross guard, with a brass pin decorated ribbed grip and a large conical pommel with raised floral patterns. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection

Rating Definition:

1) Very good, the blade has been lightly cleaned and shows minor pitting overall with patches of discoloration. The stampings on the blade are clearly visible. The quillons, finger guards and pommel have only minor scattered pitting and some age discoloration. There is some minor oxidation between the blade and guards. The grip is excellent with some minor wear. 2) Fine. Mild pitting is visible on the blade, with a mixed brown and gray patina. A darker patina is showing on the hilt, with bright edges, and a few handling marks are present on the grip.
