Description:

Joining the Nazi party in 1919, Ernst Rohm was a co-founder of and eventual chief of the Sturmabteilung (SA), also known as the Stormtroopers or Brown Shirts, who served as the uniformed branch of the NSDAP, providing security for party rallies and engaging in strong arm tactics. In February 1934, Rohm was granted the authority to issue honor daggers to members of the SA (which included the SS as an elite unit at that time) who had joined before 1932 and were still active in the organization. A thorn in Hitler's side, due to his personal ambitions and disrupting the relationship between the Party and the Wehrmacht by advocating the elevation of the SA to the standing army of the Reich, Rohm met his end on 2 July 1934, during the SS-run party purge known as the Night of Long Knives. Following Rohm's death, SS Chief Himmler ordered that the Rohm's name be struck from the daggers he issued, as seen on this example; the partial inscription "In Herzlicher Freundschaft" (In Heartfelt Friendship) is present opposite the "Mein Ehre heisst Treue" inscription, but the "Ernst Rohm" signature is completely polished away. Dagger is 13 3/8 inches long, with an 8 5/8 inch Boker marked blade, nickel guard fittings with "I" on the reverse of the guard and "10172" on top, black hardwood grip and enamel SS badge. With a black enamel finished sheath, nickel fittings, and a nickel and black leather hanger with belt loop.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with mild spotting and handling marks on the blade, along with minor edge chipping and dents on the grip. The nickel components are also very fine, with verdigris build-up on and around the hanger.
