Description:

This is certainly a one-of a-kind custom style Model 1902/06 transitional Luger carbine. This example is chambered in the 9mm Luger cartridge and carries the intertwined "GL" style monogram of George Luger. This example was created to almost mirror the other well documented and authentic Luger Carbine we sold in December 2012 and it is in overall better condition. It has the rare and unique 10,000 serial number range, reserved only for prototype type Luger pistols manufactured by the DWM factory. This also includes the "C", serial number suffix designation clearly reserved for presentation-prototype Lugers along with the intertwined "GL" monogram on the rear toggle. During the 1902 time frame all commercial Luger carbines being manufactured were in the standard 7.65mm Luger cartridge. With the development of the 9mm Luger cartridge all the European manufacturers were in the process of modifying their pistols to handle this improved cartridge, including the DWM factory. This pistol, having the unique serial number range and the special "GL" type monogram was more than likely developed for special presentation purposes. The specific characteristics of this custom one of a kind Luger pistol include: the 11 7/8 inch carbine length barrel fitted with the three position 1902 Carbine sliding tangent rear sight correctly marked 1-3, indicating 100-300 meters. The underside of the barrel is correctly stamped with the serial number "10112.C." and is fitted to the barrel extension which has the distinctive "American Eagle" crest over the chamber area. The underside of the barrel extension has the matching serial number "12" on top of the recoil lug. It has the 1906 style breechblock, flat 1906 style toggles with the primary link extractor marked “LOADED”, the "DWM" markings on the middle toggle link and the "GL" style monogram on the rear toggle link. Both the left side of the breechblock and underside of the toggles are serial numbered "12". The frame is the 1902 "old model" style that has been modified to a carbine configuration by the addition of the forend hanger on the front which is serial numbered "10,112. C" on the underside. It has also been converted to the improved 1906 style by the addition of the grip safety and a machined web support inside the rear of the frame to hold the new style coil/mainspring and bell crank assembly. Additionally the right rear frame rail, toggle lock has been properly machined downed to the 1906 style (because it now lacks the toggle lock) with a vestige of the catch still visible on the rail. The pistol has the early style polished lower safety area. It has matching checkered walnut grips, both numbered "12" on the back side with an original style checkered short forend also numbered "112" on the inside. Another interesting aspect of this Luger is since it is chambered in 9mm Luger, the barrel does not require the small accelerator inside the forend as required on Luger Carbines chambered in 7.65mm. Consequently this pistol has the original accelerator cutout inside the forend modified by inlaying a small wood insert in the cutout area where the accelerator would have normally fit. This was clearly done on a professional basis as the fit and finish of the walnut insert matches the forend perfectly with an almost invisible joint. This custom Luger carbine is accompanied by its matching 1902 style Luger carbine stock. The attaching iron is numbered "112" on top and it has the single lower sling swivel and has a dark brown horn buttplate. It is complete with one nickel plated magazine with the wooden base stamped with only a single early DWM factory acceptance proof. This pistol has not been documented as having been produced in the DWM factory. It’s creation whether done by a DWM master gunsmith or outside the factory makes it a truly unique pistol worthy of further research.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as custom fabricated with 98% of the professional applied rust blue finish overall with almost no noticeable wear anywhere. The walnut grips, forend and stock are all in excellent condition showing no handling marks with excellent checkering overall. As noted this beautiful custom Luger has matching numbers through out except for the unnumbered magazine. An interesting and attractive example of an absolutely beautiful custom Luger carbine.
