Description:

This is a very fine WWII J. P. Sauer and Son M30 Nazi Luftwaffe Survival Drilling and the original aluminum carrying/storage case that is complete with the original capture papers. The M30 Drilling was standard Luftwaffe issue to bomber crews in from 1941-43. This weapon provided a high quality survival rifle in case of a forced landing. They are a three-barreled drilling/combination gun; double barrel 12 gauge shotgun, over a 9.3X74R rifle barrel. These Luftwaffe drillings exhibit the most beautiful pre-war workmanship that consists of hand-fitted parts, high polish rust blue barrel finish with a beautiful color casehardening finish on the receiver, trigger guard, forend latching mechanism and grip cap. All these Luftwaffe M30s were fitted with a select grade of European walnut stock and forend. The top of the receiver tang has a sliding barrel selector catch, so that when the rifle barrel is selected the rear rifle sight is raised and engages the forward trigger for firing the rifle barrel. The receiver, trigger guard, screw heads and forend attaching iron have all been beautifully factory engraved with a diminutive high quality scroll pattern engraving. The bottom of the rear barrel lug has a single "Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance proof and the underside of each barrel and chamber area, each have a Commercial "Eagle/N" proofmark. Additionally each barrel is stamped with the bore and gauge/caliber markings; "12/65" and "141" and the shotgun and rifle barrels are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL". The right rear breech area of the shotgun barrel, and the right side of the buttstock are both stamped with a large prominent Luftwaffe "Eagle/Swastika" insignia. The barrels have a matted rib with brass rifle bead front sight and are fitted with the Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever. The top left edge of the receiver rail, the rear of the lower tang and under side of the barrel set are marked with serial number "332800" and inside the forend it is numbered "2800". The underside of the receiver, and right underside of chambers have the intertwined "SS" logo "Sauer & Son" factory and both sides of the receiver are marked "J.P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL". The stock and forend are both made from select grade European walnut and both have a beautifully executed hand checkering on the pistol grip and sides of the forend. The stock has the typical, small European oval cheekpiece with a color casehardened grip cap and is fitted with a black plastic serrated buttplate that has the intertwined "SS" logo of the Sauer & Son factory in the center. These drillings were all housed in an aluminum carrying case that has the gray/green painted exterior, with the inside of the having a black stenciled listing of the original contents of the case. The top of the lid is hand painted with the name and address of the WWII veterans who captured/mailed this rare survival drilling home to New York after WWII and as noted this wonderful Luftwaffe survival drilling is accompanied by the original capture papers from October 1945, which lists the same name as shown on the lid.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with 90% of the original blue finish on the barrels with some minor handling and rub marks on the sides of the barrels. The receiver, trigger guard and grip cap all retain 60% if their case colors overall, showing most of the finish loss/fading on the underside of the receiver, normally where the shotgun would have been carried in the field. The stock and forend are both in very good condition overall with nice distinct checkering overall, showing minor handling marks and light pressure dents in some areas, mixed with some light scratches on the sides of the buttstock. The case is in fine condition with most of the period green painted finish overall and the hand painted name and address on top of the lid is very well defined and easy to read. A scarce WWII Luftwaffe survival drilling with actual capture documents/providence.
