Description:

This is an example of a WWII German high turret sniper rifle manufactured by the Mauser factory that has been fitted with a Carl Zeiss commercial scope. The turret mount rifles were considered the most efficient design of the K98 rifles and they were in service from their introduction in 1939 to the end of the war. The top of the receiver ring is covered by the front turret, the right side of the receiver is marked with a single "eagle 135" Waffenamt proof and the left side has an "eagle 135" and Nazi firing proofs flanking the serial number, with the receiver side wall marked "Mod. 98". The left rear of the barrel is marked with a Nazi firing proof, "38" and with an "eagle/135" proof. The rifle has a stamped trigger guard and floor plate, and milled barrel bands. The matching bolt is a correct late war version with the milled safety. The rifle is fitted with an all blue sniper scope made by Carl Zeiss with the top of the tube marked with the Carl Zeiss logo/"Zielacht/No 74299". The rifle is equipped with a ramp front sight and tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 meters, steel cleaning rod with slotted head and mounted with a elm stock and hand guard with cupped buttplate. The right side of the buttstock is marked with a large "eagle/WaA135" proof.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as partially refinished. The rifle retains 95% original finish with some light spotting on the barrel, some high edge wear on the receiver, some heavy pitting on the forward barrel band, and some thinning and wear on the bolt release, bolt handle, floor plate and trigger guard. The stock has been varnished and remains very good with overall scattered minor dings, dents and scratches associated with a wartime weapon. The scope has been refinished and has several areas of minor pitting on the front bell housing under the blue finish and a small amount of light spotting, almost all of the finish remains and the optics are clear. The front mount is loose, with a spring absent, and does not secure the scope. The markings are clear. The bolt, barrel bands and floor plate have been renumberd to match the rifle and the rings are un-numbered. The action is very good.
