Description:

Manufactured from 1892 to 1899, this is an example of a factory engraved deluxe Burgess Slide Action shotgun with select walnut forearm and stock. The brown Damascus barrel features two bead sights and a solid matte rib. The magazine is also brown Damascus with a machine-turned bright bolt and the remaining metal surfaces having a blue finish. The left side of the receiver has a beautifully engraved field scene depicting a running deer and the right side of the receiver has a beautifully engraved meadow scene depicting a dog on point. The two scenes are set in an engraved oval panel with multiple border styles and fine scrollwork. The scrollwork extends to the trigger guard and upper tang. The engraving is in the style of Master Engraver Conrad Ulrich who was active from 1875 to 1913 and was known for his English type scrollwork and multiple border motifs, two engraved style patterns featured on this shotgun. The serial number is visible when the barrel assembly is removed. The select walnut forearm and buttstock feature multi-point checkering on the forearm and a solid recoil pad has been added to the buttstock. The select walnut pistol grip with iron sleeve, which acts as the action mechanism when slid rearward, is also checkered.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as period refinished (frame only). The barrel and magazine retain 97% plus original brown Damascus with some loss at the muzzle. The remaining metal surfaces retain 70% blue finish showing some thinning to a brown with some light pitting. The wood is excellent with most of the varnish remaining and some minor pressure dents with overall crisp checkering. The pistol grip has a hairline crack. A fine example of a factory engraved Burgess deluxe shotgun that could have been a factory exhibition piece.
