Scarce Hoggson Factory Engraved Henry Lever Action Rifle
Later production Henry Lever Action rifle that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., circa April 1865. The silver-plated brass receiver and buttplate are factory engraved with the later style pattern scroll and punch dot engraving executed by Samuel J. Hoggson. This later style engraving has the distinctive animal scene on the left side plate and large flower petals on both sides of the forward portion of the receiver. The scrollwork and punch dot matting extend to the top of the receiver, upper tang and buttplate heel. The engraved panels on the sides of the receiver have double line, scalloped borders. The engraving is nearly identical to the engraving on Henry rifle, serial number, 9888 illustrated on page 43 of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis and Henry rifle, serial number 7158, shown on page 150 of "THE HENRY RIFLE" by Les Quick. The rifle has the later production Henry features which include; receiver with no rear sight dovetail, beveled magazine follower slot, large diameter magazine follower and buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade while the rear sight is fitted with a Winchester Model 1866 carbine folding two-leaf sight. The hammer spur has the standard borderless knurling and the buttplate has a hinged trap. The butt trap contains the four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod furnished with late production Henry rifles. The American walnut or rosewood stock has a non-factory, lead blank in the sling swivel inlet stamped "A. BONNETT/BROOKSVILLE PA" in two lines. The screw-fastened sling loop is still present on the left side of the barrel. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line legend "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO, NEWHAVEN CT." in Roman (serif) letters ahead of the rear sight. The serial number "8837" is stamped on top of the barrel behind the rear sight dovetail, inside of the buttplate, left side of the lower tang and in the upper tang inlet of the stock. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style, cap-head, buttplate screws and the tang screws are correctly not serial numbered. Oliver Winchester's "W" inspection mark is stamped on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. Most Henry rifles were manufactured during the Civil War to meet the demand for combat weapons; factory engraved Henry rifles like this classic example are scarce.

Winchester 1895 Rifle 30-06
This is an excellent example of a very rare Winchester Model 1895 deluxe short rifle with three special order features that was manufactured in 1920. This rifle should not be confused with a carbine as it does not have the top handguard or a saddle ring on the receiver. It was produced with a short 22 inch heavy-barrel that measures approximately .675 at the muzzle and 1.00 inch at the breech end of the barrel in front of the receiver. The barrel is fitted with a Lyman heavy front sight with an ivory tipped bead, a two-leaf folding rear sight and a early Lyman model 95 side mounted rear sight. The sight is adjustable for elevation only with the rear peep sight adjustable for windage by drifting/tapping the rear aperture side ways. The special order stock is made from a grade 1 plus fancy walnut and the forearm is actually a grade 2 or 3 with slightly more burl walnut grain and colors, both with a hand rubbed oil finish on the wood. The top of the receiver ring has a short rolled, matte pattern and both the barrel and receiver are correctly stamped with the Winchester "W/P" proof mark. The left side of the barrel has the two line; "--NICKEL STEEL BARREL--/--ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER--" followed by "--.30 Gov't-06". The left side of the receiver is roll stamped with "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./PATENTED NOV.5.95.NOV.12.95.AUG.17.97.JAN.25.98.AUG.23.98.AUG.6.1907.". The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1895/- WINCHESTER-/ TRADE MARK REG US PAT OFF & FGN." The serial number, "400156" is stamped on the lower receiver tang.

Winchester 1886 Rifle 50 express
Manufactured in 1891, this Model 1886 is chambered in the very desirable 50 Express caliber and made for the European market. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight and marked "MADE FOR./P. ORR & SONS, MADRAS.". At the breech. P. Orrs & Sons is an old store that primarily made clocks in Chennai, started by Peter Orr in 1846 on the foundation of the nascent George Gordon & Co. The establishment was sold to Karumuthu Thiagarajar Chettiar in 1967. In 1749 the British regained control of Fort St. George and Madras and in the latter half of the 18th Century it became an important British naval base and the administrative center of the growing British dominions in Southern India. The development of the harbor in Madras led the city to become an important center for trade between India and Europe in the 18th Century. Today Madras, now known as Chennia, is a large commercial and industry center and is the automobile capital of India. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, the 400 year old city is the 31st largest metropolitan area in the world. In addition to the retailer marking at the breech, the top of the barrel is also marked "50 EX" and there are various British proofmarks on the left side at the breech. New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle 44 Henry RF
Henry lever action rifle manufactured in September 1862 during the fourth month of production. The rifle has the distinctive Henry 'gunmetal' (brass) receiver and buttplate and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. This early production rifle has the first pattern receiver with rear sight dove-tail. The barrel has a nickel-silver, early style, half-moon front sight and a dove-tail mounted, folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. The magazine has the first pattern, small diameter, follower and the receiver has the early straight cut follower slot. The receiver has the second pattern loading lever with lever latch introduced about serial number 400. The hammer has borderless knurling on the spur. The straight grain American walnut stock is not fitted with a sling swivel and the left side of the barrel lacks the screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The sling swivel and loop were extra cost, special order, features on early-mid production Henry rifles. The brass buttplate has the first style rounded heel. The buttplate has a hinged trap door. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the first style legend "HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." in two lines. The first style legend is shorter (approximately 2-17/32 inches long) and has Roman (serifed) letters except for the final "NEWHAVEN" in the second line which utilizes Gothic (block) letters. In the high 3000 serial number range a larger, 3-9/32inch legend was adopted that featured all serifed letters. The serial number "896" is located on the top barrel flat immediately ahead of the receiver, the lower left side of the tang underneath the stock the upper stock inlet, the inside of the buttplate heel, the shanks of the fitted buttplate screws and the shanks of the three tang screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. Although the Federal government purchased only about 1700 Henry rifles during the Civil War; most of the Henry rifles manufactured between 1862 and 1865 are believed to have been privately purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted the advantage of the fire power offered by a lever-action, 15-shot, magazine rifle. The Henry rifle was particularly popular with soldiers in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan regiments. Following the Civil War, Henry rifles were equally popular in the frontier West. Archaeologists at the Little Big Horn battlefield recovered a substantial number of spent cartridges from Henry rifles used by Native American warriors. Civil War production Henry rifles, like this early example, are among the most historically significant 19th Century American firearms.

Savage 99 Rifle 303 savage
This is an exceptional original example of one of the Savage Model 1899-D Military Muskets sent to Canada on contract during World War I to arm the Montreal Home Guard. It's believed that all of the production was shipped to Canada. The rifles in "musket" form incorporated a bayonet lug and military style stock with a handguard. They were chambered in the 303 Savage cartridge so as not to delay delivery which would have resulted if the design was altered for the standard Canadian 303 British Mk II cartridge. The Guardsmen were responsible for purchasing their own rifles and had the option of having their names stamped on the stock. Many also chose to have their names engraved on the left side of the receiver, (not the case with this rifle). The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address/patent dates, which the majority is covered by the hand guard and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver ahead of the trigger guard. Blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight graduated to 1,300 yards. The front barrel band is fitted with a bayonet lug. Blue finish with casehardened lever and mounted with a smooth full length walnut forearm with grasping grooves, matching hand guard, sling swivel on the rear barrel band and a straight grip perch belly stock with a steel carbine buttplate and sling swivel. The buttplate tang is marked with the rack number "328" and the top of the stock is stamped "F.A. STEVENSON" and "MHG/1914".

Winchester 1886 Rifle 45-70
This is an exceptional example of a deluxe, special order Winchester Model 1886 take-down rifle as manufactured in late 1900's. This rifle has several very rare special order features such as: (1) take down barrel/receiver (2) half-length magazine (3) pistol grip stock (4) shotgun style buttstock with shotgun style buttplate (5) checkered stock and forend (6) rubber butt plate. The unusual aspects of this rifle is that with all these special order features the walnut stock and forend are both plain, non-figured walnut and the checkered panels on the stock and forend are both very small. The rifle has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, loading gate and trigger. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock has a black, hard rubber, pistol grip cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" in relief and a black, hard rubber, checkered, shotgun buttplate with the circular Winchester logo in the center. The round barrel has a Lyman "sheard bead" front sight with ivory bead and a Winchester, adjustable sporting rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped in two lines "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" with the left rear side marked "NICKEL STEEL" only with no other markings, with "45-70" stamped in front of the receiver. Again this is an unusual caliber since it was manufactured at just about the time the 33 WCF was coming out and it has the nickel steel barrel which was really intended for smokeless powder cartridges. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number "122747" is stamped on the lower tang behind the tang screws.

"MODEL. 1876." is roll-stamped on the upper tang. The serial number "16771" is stamped in small numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. Included with the rifle is a factory letter, which verifies the caliber, octagonal barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, casehardened receiver and the Five Dollar level engraving. Additionally, the letter reports that the rifle arrived at the warehouse on October 1, 1887 and left on December 1, 1886, which we ascribe to a transcription error.

Lot 17
New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle 44 Henry RF
Henry lever-action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., in November 1863. This rifle is one of the 800 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in December 1863 to arm the 1st D.C. Cavalry regiment. The 1st D.C. Cavalry was the only Federal unit entirely armed with Henry rifles during the Civil War. Commanded by politically connected Col. Lafayette Baker, the 1st D.C. Cavalry was initially assigned to police and provost duty in the District of Columbia operating under the direct orders of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. After a series of successful raids against Federal units in Northern Virginia by Col. John S. Mosby, the 1st D.C. Cavalry was assigned to combat Confederate partisan rangers. In May 1864 the regiment was reassigned to the Department of Virginia and saw action in operations around Petersburg. The 1st D.C Cavalry was present at Appomattox Court House when the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered on April 9, 1865. During the fighting around Petersburg during the summer and fall of 1864 a significant number of Henry rifles were captured from the 1st D.C. Cavalry. Some captured 1st D.C. Cavalry Henry rifles were apparently issued to the body guard of Confederate President Jefferson Davis when he fled from the Confederate capital during the final days of the Civil War. The 800 Henry rifles purchased for the 1st D.C. Cavalry under the December 30, 1863 contract are the only Henry rifles fully marked with Ordnance final inspection and sub-inspection marks. The Ordnance Department purchased 627 additional Henry rifles in April-May 1865 to arm the 3rd U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry regiment. However the 1865 contract rifles did not have Ordnance inspection marks and were issued too late to be used in combat. This rifle has all of the features found on the late 1863 production rifles purchased for the 1st D.C. Cavalry. The barrel and integral 15-shot magazine have a square-back nickel-silver front sight blade and Third Pattern folding leaf rear sight with "900" yard marking below the sight notch on the top of the leaf. The magazine has the Second Pattern large diameter brass follower and the follower slot on the bottom of the receiver has milled flats to accept the larger follower. The distinctive brass receiver is the Second Pattern introduced about serial number 3,100 that lacks the alternate rear sight dovetail. The early style buttplate has a rounded heel and hinged brass butt trap door. The stock is correctly not fitted with a sling swivel and the left side of the barrel lacks the screw fastened loop for a sling hook (most 1st D.C.
