Description:

Following the Civil War the U.S. Government decided to convert many percussion military arms to metallic cartridge. These carbines were completely refurbished by Sharps during the conversion process and if needed the stocks were replaced with ones not having a patch box, which is the case with this example. This carbine is chambered for the 50-70 round with the original 6 groove barrel. The top of the barrel is marked with the three line address ahead of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1863" at the breech. The left side at the breech is marked "E.P.R". Lawrence patent rear sight and block front sight with blade. The lock is marked with the Sharps and Lawrence patent dates, the left side of the receiver is marked with the two line patent marking and various parts are marked with a single letter inspection mark and the saddle ring bar base is marked with "?W.R". Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a sharp "DFC" ribbon cartouche on the left side.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as with 97% blue finish remaining on the barrel, showing some thinning in places and a few minor dings. All but one screw head, (forward receiver screw) retain 99% of the bright niter blue finish. The barrel band is a mix of faded case colors and smooth dove gray patina. The remaining parts retain 90% bright case colors with areas faded to a smooth dove gray patina. The wood remains excellent with a small minor blemish on the right side of the stock, and light handling/storage marks. The barrel markings are fading in places, otherwise the markings are clear. The action is excellent. This carbine appears as issued and unfired after it was arsenal refurbished.
